All I have to say is, "It's better to be safe than sorry!"

I think a little paranoia is good. It keep's you on your toes.

Keep you money and passport next to your skin in a money belt and I wouldn't keep a camera e.g. in a bag on my back.

After 5 trips averaging 8 weeks each in 5 years with a small daypack that didn't completely zip shut, I was tapped on the shoulder countless times by locals telling me my bag was 'open'. And it never got 'knifed' once. And yes, I realy should get that zip fixed, but where have all the shoeshine/zip fixing boys gone from Indian Railway Stations ?

christ i have a good back pack i was depending on.
i also have a roller but not large.
I m not camping or treking.

Use whatever is most comfortable for you; India will survive and likely, so will you and your "stuff."

I carry a shoulderbag that's like a large gym bag. It's very light (empty weight: 1 pound) and washable, and holds more than I need. It works for me! It's that plaid thing on the bench in this photo:
