Irrational Fear - Snakes
I know this is stupid but I would really appreciate some input. I have an utterly irrational fear of snakes just the site of one send me in a tizzy. I am going to Mumbai for a wedding in August 2009 and thought I would go for a month and travel all around. I know that the snake charmer business has slowed because of animal protection laws but what about when I get out of the cities. I am just trying to get some input as to how many people, if any have run across a snake(s) when they were minding there own business and just trying to enjoy the beauty and experience of india.

Mumbai has mainly- even only- two legged snakes.
Umm, most Indians who have lived or travelled outside cities would have seen wild snakes in their lifetime. However, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Chances are you won't run into any at all, though you don't say where you will be travelling. |

I've been to India three times, all in the south, Tamil Nadu. I've been in more than a few rural areas. I've yet to run into a snake, at least the legless variety.
don't worry about it. you're more likely to run into the two-legged species of snakes. |

Probability of seeing a snake in Mumbai <= Probability of Mr Bush speaking sense <= finding WMD in Iraq or shall I say "Eye Rack"

I've seen snakes in Kerala (several). I've seen a couple in my Chennai garden (Sorry Sama; you missed them
), but none when I lived in the centre of the city.Main thing with snakes is that they do not hang around waiting to jump on you; they are more scared of you than you are of them. But they are, I guess, fairly common in rural India, and plenty of people manage to die of snake bite every year. I wouldn't worry about it either, but I would also not go walking in grass or undergrowth with bare feet or sandals. I don't do that in the dark even in my own garden. Like with food and dogs; just take sensible precautions. Be far more afraid of the mosquitoes!

whether they're more scared of me is really irrelevant - i aint asking and i dont wanna know. i am terrified/petrified of them. a friend of mine once told me "heck dont worry - they're harmless"... i mean really now - that was never the issue i'd rather die of extenuating circumstances than be confronted with the creature i'm-a-tellin-ya this fear is kinda paralytic ![]() :brishti |

Well folks, we once encountered one in our first floor bedroom - it was silently watching us from top of the cot.
Another one was, of course, gentelman enough to make a rubbing sound while entering our ground floor room. i was watching tv and s/he just bypassed my chair and went into another room. A third one was hanging from electric cable (it was not concealed) in the dining room. And certainly i ran over quite a lot while taking bicycle rides. Well, i don't know whether i frightened u or u're are just assured that despite all this, i still hadn't a bite so far. but anyway, newbie, welcome to India. ![]() |
