Ipod Question
I just bought a 40GB Ipod. I like CD quality music (wav) but it takes up a lot of space. How would you guys compare a 320 bitrate MP3 with a Wav file.
Thanks in Advance. |

From what I've heard, you'll be lucky to tell the difference between a 320 bitrate MP3 and CD quality. Like, you'd need the hearing of a bat!

do you use ur IPOD with an apple computer or with an pc?
I work with my pc and the musicmatch-program to put music on my IPOD. I always use the best mp3-rate (like cd-quality). And for my ears it sounds like the original cd (but maybe I'm already nearly deaf after being too often in clubs and concerts ).The space you need for this mp3-format is 1 minute of music is about 1 MB. Have fun with your IPOD (wow 40 GB - I only have 30) ![]() |

Thanks Indy. I was thinking of the 320 bitrate.
Angelika I use a PC and Musicmatch. Thanks.. I might opt for the 320 bitrate. I was about to buy the 30 GB but luckily when I went to the store I saw the 40 GB ![]()

India
I bought one in Hong Kong for HK$3600 (Roughly $480 USD). I thought Apple sold these in India. |

I use 256k MP3. I'm not sure if the d to a conversion or the analogue-out on the ipod is good enough to merit higher. It sounds great on headphones but pumping it through my Naim amps reveals its flaws easily.
The downside of high bitrate encodings (as well as memory usage) is shorter battery life as the disk has to spin more. Also the ipod seems to keep the disc spinning continuously if a tune is longer than its 32MB ram cache can take, whereas normally it just bursts the data into ram and shuts down the disc. |

I bought it off Apple web store (30 GB, US$499) though you can get it at a cheaper rate from ebay (at some risk). Many of them ship internationally. |

Regarding bitrates, many people encode at 128 kbits. that is a bit low and there is noticeable quality loss. encoding at 192 is generally ok in terms of quality and file size. you may also consider vbr (variable bit rate) encoding.
i think that musicmatch's software is pretty crummy. other options are available including ephpod, which is free. also, apple is supposed to announce itunes for windows next week. all of the above is my nerdy opinion. -hit |

Thanks to all of you for your valuable input. Hit - I can't wait for itunes PC. Musicmatch is truly a crappy program and I actually paid for it.
