ID other than passport...

I'm in the final stages of packing--I leave tomorrow night. I was only going to take my passport, VISA and bank card. Do I need other picture identification in case my passport gets ripped off? What do other people do?

I always keep two complete photocopies of all ID that I take with me - in different places. That way you at least have some form of proof of who you are when reporting a robbery, booking into a hotel, whatever.....and if you have 2 copies, you can send/take/leave one of them with the Embassy of your country whilst waiting for official ID or a replacement passport - etc...

I have photocopies, but I'm wondering if I should take a piece of picture in addition to my passport (e.g., driver's license) or do people usually just take their passports?

Bring photocopies of all your IDs as advised by Shanthi. I would suggest you to bring your Driving Licence, which is regarded as strong proof of identity in india.

If needed, you will be able to use both passport and driving licence, former as proof of address, later as proof of identity or vice versa.

HAPPY JOURNEY

Bring your birth certificate if you were born in Canada. That carries more weight with the Canadian High Commission in Delhi as compared to a driving licence or any other document.

Apart from taking photo copies of your documents with you. leave a photocopy and list all your special numbers & everything & put them in a 'Yahoo briefcase' or something similarly safe on-line. That way if the worst does come to the worst you'll be able to get all the information you need with just a few clicks,,,,,,,,,,,,

keep the photocopies of the passport , it will help you a lot , indian authorities dont have any idea about other id proofs.
and any how if you miss the passport then you should approcah the nearest consulate of your country along with the police complaint form the area of incident ,they could give you a temporary passport for one year in few days . it is very difficult to travel in india with out passports

It would be easy to travel in India without a passport, it is very rare that someone wants to see it.

I second Seventies idea on keeping a copy of all your details in a yahoo briefcase account!
That way if you lose things all you need is access to the internet and a printer!!

yes, traveling would be easy, but not lodging! Usually you have to show your travel documents at the check in at every hotel/guesthouse/...

What a good idea, Seventies!

My experience is that hotels want to see passport when you check in, so it is not so rare to be asked for it.

A passport number and details are a requirement on the tourist C form you fill in at most hotels!

Yup, but most of the time they let you fill out the C form and do not want to see the passport. I am not saying that it is a good idea to travel without a passport but if I lost my passport in Kerala I would not go non stop to Delhi and get a new one.
Does anyone know what they actually do with those millions of C forms, most with barely readable handwriting?

It's a way of tracking your movements should anything go wrong and you end up on the missing list! As such it's rather a good idea!
