Smile How much to pack..?

Hello,

I am new to this website and have been reading threads over the past few days Thank you for all the helpful information!
In ten days I will be visiting Kolkata for a month as a volunteer. I have read a lot about clothes, packing, etc. but honestly wanted to ask a few questions, just to hear some more opinions from others.
My main thing is clothing, and I am wondering-- what is considered to be too short for wear? Right now I have packed two skirts and two pairs of light cotton capris that are 3/4 length (fall about mid-calf I guess, if that's any help). I'm just wondering if this is too short...I plan on buying clothes shortly after I arrive.

Thank you!

Capris are just fine, its short shorts you should avoid! I live in my capri's and skirts all summer.

Capris should be fine, and skirts are great. I'd avoid mini-skirts though.

I practically live in long (calf and even ankle-length) skirts when I visit India. They keep me nice and cool, love Indian skirts in particular. My teenage daughter has finally come around as well. Used to make faces at long skirts but now she says - "I can get in and out of the bath room so fast now, thanks mom!" Yay me!

It depends where you are, the more rural and traditional the setting, the happier you'll feel if you're covered up. Salwar kameez are also surprisingly effective against the heat, which is why I wear them even in "anything goes" Delhi. However, I'm guessing you're going to be in small villages, so your plan of buying most of your clothes when you arrive is ideal.

Meanwhile, though you might want to think carefully about insect repellents, nobody's going to actually scream at the sight of your lower calves and ankles.

Okay, another question about clothes lol.

I bought several of these shirts to take with me to India:

and one of these:

I should mention that I am somewhat more petite than the models, so the shirts are much wider on me for some reason (which I guess is an added benefit!). Thoughts? A lot of people on the forums have said to take light, loose-fitting shirts, but I never found a lot of examples, which is why I'm posting this here.

Both are ok. For the second one, just take care that it does not show the cleavage when you bend forward.

Will be careful...considering that I'm not a very big person in that area, this hopefully will not be a problem

I agree, both those look fine to me too esp since you said they're not tight on you.

Hope you have a wonderful trip to Kolkata

Both those shirts look very nice ... though you may find that cotton knits are warmer than woven cotton ... but you can buy or have others made after you get there and see what the locals are wearing.
