I carry a 65 l pack , the major part being being used up by three items : a small tent , a kerosene storm kitchen and a down sleeping bag. If you dont need the the trekking gear , you should do fine with a 40 l pack. Bring a absolute minimum of clothes and send home stuff (book post is really cheap) .
Since my latest trip I ´ve used Eagle Creeks compression bags , which have worked fine so far.
I`ve never used a mozzie net myself , but I suspect this is the kind of things where you can buy a inexpensive locally made or a hightech version which is lighter & more compact.

I should try to combine this with a former thread but I/mike tells me it's hard to do, so I won't try for fear of messing things up.

Anyway there was a previous thread with this sort of thing - although that one was about weight and you ask about volume and I am a scientist by education so I know they are different!!!!

Anyway here's that other thread I was talking about.

my pack is 17lbs - nearly 8kg. i dont not know the volume (liters) but its the size of a med lg college bookbag.

includes extras: sizeable shortwave, 6 batteries, water, 1L whisky, 24 sm cigars in wood box, 4 brass locks (3 on bag/1 spare), small chain for train, 3 books, too much laundry soap and a medical kit. immersion coil/coffee (a must) -maybe no camera this trip...

big bags freak me out.

you may want to check

Karrimor's guide to choosing a rucsac

you select trip purpose/contect from the list and it comes out with recommended volume

although no "India travel" option on the "purpose of trip" list

when I was buying my last rucsac I did this Karrimor test and bought a 50l one (not just for India, with room for heavy boots and a warm jacket). Then I realised that it works exactly like with my handbag:

whatever size I buy I will manage to fill it in to the top

Since I realised that I carry small handbags (and manage well) and when I buy my next rucsac I will buy a smaller one and am sure will manage just fine with 40l

M2 has discussed his bag-experience at length somewhere else. Can't find the thread right now.

Im in the same boat as you Freemanx!

All of my previous backpacking has been with a 60L bag, and now I feel its time to downsized and a set a new level of comfort and mobility to my travels. I just got myself a light 40L (Speed 40 by BlackDiamond)for my next trip to India (3 weeks long). Im leaving next week , so Ive been 'pre-packing' this week, and so far I fit all the essential and with more than 1/3 of free space to bring back stuff.

Here's an interesting blog on packing light from this fellow traveler that have inspired me: http://www.aaronswwadventures.com/20...aveling-light/
