Gifts
My best investment before the trip was my izone polaroid. Wrapped chocolates such as snickers or starbursts (yes I know-american wrapped candies) proved a nice compliment. The main thing you have to remember about handouts is to be sensitive to when it is appropriate. Obviuosly if you are surrounded by lots of children it is not practical to start taking photos or handing out candies. You will create a small riot. (As I found out in a local village)
If you use gifts with discretion, such as a part of a tip or when you have a good service (such as guides on safari or hotel staffs) will prove the gifts more welcomed. I do like the idea of contacting the schools if you decide to donate supplies, as the people in charge of the school might better know how to distribute. You'll get a feel for it when you are in India, but I would not making handing out gifts a big concern. The people will be fascinated enough with how you appear. Just my thoughts. Have a great time! |
