Not sure where I'm from

I can tell you how to make one from paper
Get a big piece of paper or poster board, make a paper boat out of it, then make it fit on your head upside down Won't quite float tho |

It is against the law, in India, to wear these caps in prison; they are an outgrowth of the "swadeshi' movement and were thus banned for many years.

Libertarians are sick.
If I saw some libertarian politician trying to co-opt the symbols of Gandhi, I would probably slap him. Libertarian politics have NOTHING to do with peaceful resistance to a repressive regime. What they have to do with is extreme stupidity and willingness to forsake the welfare of 90% of the people in order to line the pockets of a few. I hope this guy never found his hat, and if he did find it, that somebody with a lick of sense put him in his place. |

Er, just to keep our i's dotted: There is of course another form of Libertarianism (and older, I believe; the former just nicked the term and/or went through their own separate development)* : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian_socialism
For the previous interpretation, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism * (Reading up some, I'm reminded that the difference seems to be largely one between European and North American interpretations, but certainly not solely so today.)

Unfortunately, since the term has been so co-opted, most people don't refer to that particular ideology as Libertarian Socialism anymore. It's usually grouped under the more general term of "anarchism".
I've never met anyone who identified with the term "libertarian" who was a socialist, at all, really. Most of them are either Conservatives/Republicans who don't like to use that term, or diehard capitalists who took "Nyah nyah nyah! It's a free country!" way too literally. |

Yes, see my edit above on European vs. US usage. The latter is spilling over these ways though.
Anyway all of this is of course widely , I just couldn't help myself as so often. |

Ok folks, back to the subject of Nehru or Gandhi caps, I found a source. I don't know what the rules are about posting commercial websites (I just joined this week)so I won't put a link here, but if you put the words "Monarch" and "Gandhi Cap" in your search engine you should find what i did. Here is the description from that website: "The Gandhi cap is made out of khadi or 100% cotton thick fabric. It is pointed in front and back and has wide band. We at Jodhpur can make it for you as per your head size. You can order Gandhi cap or topi in any color of your choice." It's pricey, though--$55--but apparently custom made. I'm ordering one anyway. If anyone wants to know how it comes out, just let me know.

I cannot believe that any Indian would pay over Rs.2000 for such a thing, so this seems to be a ploy to get money from Americans!

Sounds about right, Nick
btw Don't those Congress bigwigs like to go around in homespun khadi wear by default? Seems the defiant meaning has, er, shifted somewhat. |
