For the larger lady ~
Will my mum be able to pick up a kameez with ease ( sorry but I had to , lol )as she is a larger lady ?
I ask this question because in Thailand she found it really difficult to pick up clothing as they are all so tiny...I myself at a size 8/10 (uk) have some problems as they seem to believe all women should be built like a 13 year old boy . Anyhow she is around a 14/16 (UK) and would like to pick up a kameeze or kurta....also what are the size conversions for India ? |

She would certainly be able to find something in the 14/16 size range! In fact that is not considered 'large'. Anokhi shops, and Westside in Karol Bagh, all have these sizes, and I imagine many other places will too.
She can always have one made to measure as well - find a suit piece and a tailor can whip it up quite quickly in a day or so.

Absolutely no problem in India. As Aishah says, that's not even really that large!
When I bought a couple of pre-made salwar kameez sets in Jaipur, they were so big they had to be altered to fit me & I'm probably a 12 & they are still very loose (the way I like them). I think they even do it at no charge or maybe 10 rps. Thailand does have generally slim, small people & they don't seem to accommodate us bigger western women very well! Though I always manage to find something looking at Large & Extra Large ![]() |

Fabindia also has some larger sizes and is easily found in a lot of cities.
I've had difficulty finding tops based on cut of tops - shoulders fine, waist fine, hips fine [given the legnth of many tops] but bust too tight . I've also noticed that especially in mall department stores I've come across some absolutely lovely salespeople who know their stuff and can "size" you in 2 seconds flat. I now have a couple of ready-to-wear companies I know will most likely fit and go to their racks first. The tailor option is great too. |

I agree, you're mom's not large. She'll have no problem finding clothes. I'm a size 10 (US) and my sister (a 14/16, US) can easily fit into the pants the Salwar Kameez I purchased while in India. The only issue, as mentioned above, is that the tops are too tight in her bust, but she can still squeeze into them, it just, um, flattens her out a bit. They have all sorts of sizes there, she'll be fine.

BTW, the Salwar Kemeez pants are absolutely HUGE in the waist. I honestly believe I could carry triplets in those things without any alterations necessary. NOT something I wish to find out, btw!

It depends what style you go for. I sometimes find that the kameez don't fit around the bust, even though I am not that big. Some do come with multiple seams, so if it doesn't fit you can undo one seam and have a bit more room in it without having to go to a tailor.
