Electricity: International plugs & Sockets

Now that i've been taught how to do links, here's a rather useful little website for travellers wanting to know the electrical situation in different countries.

Thanks

We've seen this one before sometime back, but a reminder is always welcome.

I'm going to edit the thread title to refer to electricity so that people who need it can more easily find the information.

thanks Nick, a much better title.

Do we have a 'useful links' thread somewhere? might be a good idea...

digital camera power?

I'm confused. I am planning on bringing my digital camera from the US to Kolkata this summer but will I just need a plug adaptor or will I also need a voltage converter/transformer?

Amanda, Check the device power adapter casing. Many now do both. Otherwise its spend money time. Always match the AC adapter type to the need (electroncs vs. hair dryer, etc.).

I only used a plug adapter because my battery charger already converted the voltage. it will say 100-220 on it (or something like that!)

Just to repeat Yogagal--Check the charger. I can almost guarantee it will say 110-240 somewhere in tiny print. Camera companies know people take them all over the world. You will only need a plug adapter. Though they do have more than one kind of socket! Just part of the adventure!

yes, camelgirl, VERY SMALL PRINT!

I found that I never used my three-prong anywhere, I always used the two-prong adapter.

I'm being a bit thick, folks (nothing new there then...) and I am still confused about these plugs. I have an adapter which claims to be worldwide, but has only two round pins (like they use in continental Europe). Is this kind of adapter good for use in India or will I need to get a new adapter?

Thanks.

It will work, but it will fit loosely in Indian sockets and make a bad connection --- just like a lot us stuff I buy here does!

Here's our usual recommendation: buy a cheap, light 4-way in UK, chop the plug off it and leave that at home. When you come to India, buy an Indian plug and fit that --- or ask the shop to, if you don't want to bring pliers and screwdriver.

Then you can plug all your chargers and stuff into that.

How's about merging with the existing Electric Supply Pins Plugs Adapter etc explained ? Just a thought. (That is already a sticky thread, btw. To other readers: What's a sticky? Those are threads "stuck" on top of any given sub-forum, to always remain on top, not get suppressed by newer threads.)

ps I'm afraid a "useful links" thread will just soon start to suffer from overload like any other thread might, I mean imagine having to dig through 500 pages of such a thread, with no logical order whatsoever. So it may sound good, but won't help you in the long (or even not-so long) run. How to keep it to the relevant basics without too much white noise (and who's to say which are and aren't), and all that.

Even (very good) stickies suffer from this. Which could be a good argument to close them when they threaten to become another "please answer my easy questions which in fact this thread had intended to cover" thread, instead of just a lowdown of the basics, which is really the function of a sticky. The problem then arises of course that after closing, that sticky will never be updated anymore, and so will soon become outdated, perhaps not so visibly to the casual reader... Ah, all the fun of board logistics. Can never win, it sometimes seems. But one can try

Thanks, all. I knew I'd seen something around here, but you know what it's like when you search - you have to get just the right search terms!
