Dress code for girl travelling India

Hi I'm travelling in India with my boyfriend over New Year. We'll be staying all over Goa and also spending a week around and about New Dehli. Can anyone advise me on what is appropriate dress for girls both in Goa and New Dehli?

Dress conservatively and you can't go wrong

I've seen women in all states of dress, and in larger destinations that see frequent tourists, like Delhi and Goa, the people are probably used to seeing half naked westerners walking around, but why disrespect the culture like that?

Every recommendation I read before I came here was to wear loose clothing, pants/skirts well below the knee and sleeves. And I support these recommendations.

Also, if you end up walking around without your husband, you'll get hassled a whole lot less if you're covered up (though getting hassled a bit is unavoidable).

You can also buy local clothes when you get here.

Goa is quite relaxed with all the tourists in bikinis on the beaches etc but I would suggest always covering up to some extent just to reduce the stares. You will feel a whole lot more comfortable. It might feel strange taking long pants/sleeves to a warm beach holiday, but you'll be glad you did.

Besides many threads on 'women's wear in India' on the forum, if you scroll down, there is a 'Dress Code Goa' thread under 'similar threads'.

Generally speaking you will have to be much more careful in Delhi than in Goa, I think.

You may as well ask what to wear in America! Presumably you'd wear something different for visiting an elderly relative, than for hanging out on the beach, and in a nightclub in the city and hiking in the countryside.

There is a really helpful sticky thread about this, reading the last pages should give you a good idea. Blondes- to dye or not to dye? & women's wear, women's safety etc

I only know about Delhi.

Delhi is a massive city and the young people are very western (especially around Connaught Place). Loads of girls / women in twenties are in jeans / t-shirts with their mobile phones and sunglasses, just like in Leeds or London. The Delhi look is western and sweet (very 90's) but nothing sexy, no bare thighs or micro which is the upcoming look for Europe 2010.

Just think jeans and t shirt and you'll be fine. Delhi can be cold in Dec / Jan so take a light jacket.

The problem with Delhi is the actual pavements, i'd imagine it would be impossible to wear heels, I just wore flat shoes all of the time and they are perfect.
