Delhi, Agra & Rajasthan in December/January
I'm 60+ and going to India (for the first time) on an escorted tour (also for the first time, have always done my own thing before). What sort of clothing should I pack ? We don't have long in any one place so I don't know that there will be time to have anything made (I'm 5'10 & 'traditionally built' so nothing readymade will fit). I believe it gets pretty cold at night at that time of year but what about daytime temperatures ? I was thinking along the lines of cotton underwear and shirts and jeans/cargo pants or long skirts with a thick fleece jacket for nighttime.

It would depend on where you are going in India. South India and Maharashtra hardly have any winters. Where as in north it can get cold. We call it freezing in Delhi when it becomes 4 degree Celcius during the day but that doesn't happen every year.

These places are going to be cold. Delhi would have 6-7 to 10 degrees Celsius at night and Rajasthan a little lower. Wishing you a wonderful trip.

Packing for Rajasthan
I would advise you not to take jeans - they take such a long time to dry in the colder weather. Cargo pants or cotton pants are just fine. A couple of long sleeved T-shirts and a fleece top will serve you just right. You can have your clothes washed at any hotel for a minimum fee and if you give it to them early in the morning, you will have it back by late afternoon. I am quite tall as well and although it is scarce, you will find things ready-made to wear. I normally just pop into the first tailor I see and have wonderful clothing made overnight!

I'm also going to Agra, Delhi, Jaipur and also Varanasi, Khajuraho, and Ranthambhore, December 2-16 and I'm afraid that now, after reading this thread, I'm totally confused about what clothes to pack! All of the weather charts I've found say that Agra gets a high of 24, low 8; Delhi high 23, low 8; Jaipur high 24, low 9; Varanasi high 25, low 9. To me, the listed high temps are balmy summer weather. Are you discussing what to take so you're covered at nights when it gets colder, or is it also colder than these temps listed in all the charts during the days?
I was going to take a few pairs of light cotton pants, several pairs of capris, t-shirts, a light sweater and windbreaker and of course, coming from Canada in December, I'll have my winter coat with me. Is this selection a bad idea? Should I take a set of long underwear just in case? How depressing...I had visions of giving my summer clothes one last outing before packing them away for the season... |

You will most definitely NOT need a pair of warm underwear! Coming from sunny South Africa, I get chilly quite easily and in my experience you will only need warm clothing in the evenings. I have to say, however, that Delhi was relly cold last year and I had to buy extra warm clothing - so if you are cold, pop into the first shop and buy a warm woollen shawl...
