Currency question

I'm wondering how much currency one is allowed to bring into India without having to declare it when going through customs.....I read somewhere that anything over $2,500 needs to be declared, but another source said $10k (?!) I'll be bringing mostly US traveler's checks.

Any info would be much appreciated!

10K appears to be correct.
