countdown with a mosquito net problem
Just 3 more days till I get to India for the first time.
The countdown has begun . However I'm stil struggling with a last minute issue. Should I take or not a mosquito net? We are planning on staying in low/mid-range hotels (we are staying in mumbai's bentleys when we arrive - mixed reviews here). Is it really necessary to take a mosquito net in this case? Hotels like bentleys don't provide nets?A last question. It's impossible to use nets in the trains right? So how people manage to deal with mosquitos there? Or do they stay away from trains ?Thanks people ![]() |

Marbles - for me it depends on where you're going in India and at what time of year. Personally, I've never taken one and have never bought one while there. Most of my travel has been in the north, along the Ganges Valley, in Rajasthan and up into the foothills. with a brief stay in the south, around Madras. I've always traveled from October through April. I don't know if mid-range hotels provide nets; none of the low range hotels I stay in have provided one. If you feel safer taking one, do. They're small; you can sell it if you find it isn't needed. Have a great trip. Scott

Thanks Darmabum
We are going to enter via Mumbai, then heading to rajhastan, Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. You can see by my first post, that we are going in the end of October/November. I just don't want to buy and carry something that (perhaps) I don't need, looking at the conditions in which we are travelling. |

Another option marbles is the Goodknight mosquito zapper. I've used it for years and it works well for me!!
Around 50 rupees with fluid included enough for 45 nights!! Only thing is if the electric goes out, the little buggers are back within the hour!! The thing is with mossies you just never know where they are going to be a problem!! As for the train well they're there of course I generally put a little anti-mossie cream on my neck and arms that seems to keep them at bay! |

options, options.... In the end probably I'm going to take one. Ohh well, less space to take goodies from India. And I still have to work out how I'm going to put the net in place. I guess I will have a laugh at that
.Hope to have the time to post some impressions of an India begineer here ![]() |

I recommend this every time. Get the two person model.
Skeeter Defeater 1.2 Pounds (544 grams) Stuff-sack size: 3.75" dia. X 17" (9.5cm dia X 43cm) That's just not a lot of extra burden to carry. Free standing so you don't have to worry about setup or ceiling fans. Unless you are at higher elevations mosquitos are always something to prepare for, doesn't matter what season. Cyberhippie is right about the trains, just use bug juice. Odomos in India works nicely and doesn't seem as offensive as other products. You might also want to look at treating your clothes with Permethrin. It lasts for weeks, is totally odorless, and prevents the little buggers from biting through your clothing.

I saw some threads mentioning skeeter, and I liked it. However Shaktipalooza, it's too late for me to buy that on the net (leaving next saturday). So I'm just gonna buy what I can around here and put my imagination to work.
I also read about Permethrin, but where can I buy that (not thinking about the internet)? pharmacy? what comercial products are available with permethrin? Thanks alot for all your help. |

In the US Permethrin is typically found at stores that carry camping gear.

I agree with cyberhippie, buy a Goodknight liquid, plug it in and the mozzies will be gone.
