Cost of living in India
I'm going to be going to India travelling around the country for 6 months and was wondering how much one could expect to spend a day including accomadation and food? I'm a budget traveller and will be roughing it alot of the time with my tent.....which brings me on to my next question........are their laws in India about camping and hitch-hiking that one should be aware of??

I don't know your personal circumstances but i am unsure of this roughing it, hitch- hiking and tent idea .Transport in India ,compaired to europe is cheap. same with accom. and food. the maximum you will probelly have to fork out is £10 per day.a lot of the time you will have problems spending that!!(unless you like Hilton style) busses and trains are plentifull and great fun and all for a good price .Do a bit more research and enjoy .Good travelling and have fun.

Don't take a tent and do not hitchike, there is no need as mentioned in the prior post. Camping is almost non existant in India, as is hitchiking.
Plan on spending 600-1000 rupees a day at least for travel, food and lodging even on a tight budget. A beer is 50-100 rupees depending where you travel! Also there will come a time when you crave some indulgences such as a hot shower or chocolate or a really quiet nights sleep in a soft bed with crisp clean sheets. Plan on having a little extra for those times. 6 months is a long time in India and it can be grueling sometimes, but it is well worth any hardships you have to endure, it is a magical place. |

...agree, forget the tent
You'll find it pretty impossible to pitch it anywhere ! Depending on where you are going, 'roughing' it will be perfectly easy, and in some places just plain unavoidable ! You could in theory exist on 300rs a day and still eat well - a room can cost less than 100rs leaving 200rs for food and drink.. but be kind to yourself... for not much more you can really enjoy yourself... 6 months is and is not a long time.. it all depends on the pace and what you hope to acheive... |

Go with that budget Rs600 (min) to Rs1000 (good) per day, you do not want your trip to be just one arduous event after another. Re: the Tent. If you are planning to do any trekking in the Himalaya region then a tent can definately come in handy - I have extensively used a tent in treks from the Kullu/Chamba/Parvati/Baspa and Solang valleys all in Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal - but I have never used a tent anywhere else in India, so probably for trekking it is worth while.
