Cool weather wear - what to pack and what goes with a Salwar Kameez?

I'll be in Delhi, Varanasi and Rajasthan for Nov, and while lots of people have told me it'll be cold there - I think it may be a relative term. (I live in Vancouver, Canada - and warm is 20 degrees). I've been looking at the weather lately, and it doesn't seem to be going below 10C. That's still only cool!

How cold does it get? I'm trying to decide what to pack and I dont' know if I should bring a warmer jacket or sweater, or thinner fleace 'hoodie'.

I was also hoping to buy and wear a couple salwar kamises. I was wondering what women usually wear with a salwar kamise when it gets chilly. Is a shawl usually enough? I'd like to know what to look for while I'm shopping there .

Thanks!

How Cold is COLD, Anyway?

Indians will tell you the North is cold but remember, it's 40C there in June! I found January nights in Delhi distinctly cold -- temps around 5C and it's damp and foggy at that time of the year. You might even want socks in January.

October and November aren't bad for us Northern types; it will be very nice in the daytime (could be in the 70s) and maybe cool or even chilly at night. I find that silk long undies work really well under a salwar kameez and keep me nice and warm ... and I can sleep in them if it's really cold at night.

You'll see both shawls and cardigans worn with salwar kameez, and if you get one with a high neck, you can wear a T-shirt (or that silk top) underneath.

You can Google for (city name) (month) Weather and get all the average temperature ranges

Yes Travellerette, its right that its a relative term.In November its not too cold its a very pleasent weather.December 15th till Janaury 15th , we can say its extreme cold in Northern India.Thats the time when the tempertaure goes down really low.In Nov the average max temp is around 26 while the min temp is close to 14.

I found the difference between day and night temps the most difficult. buying a nice blanket/shawl when you're there is good. then you can use it to wear in the eves or to sleep under.

November will be pleasant in the plains. In the night you may require light woolens. You can buy a nice light Shawl in Delhi.

Bear in mind where you live you probably go around from your comfily heated home to a heated shop on heated transport, etc. etc., and one may generally not tend to be out as much. You may find the cold in India much more pervasive, as there's often far less escape from it. I'd been under the assumption this was largely a budget traveler thing, but a recent report here indicated differently.

There's some general weather charts on this thread which you may find useful: India climate chart . I agree Nov. should be no problem in that area, balmy to hot rather, but winters vary and the way you survive them at home doesn't really compare.
