Clothing for N. India

i could use some advice on clothing. im a bit of a freak when it comes to warm weather and packing light.

how will i fare starting april 10 in delhi and heading north carrying 2 pair shorts and three shirts, no jumper (plus tee and underwear for sleeping)?

it would be folly to try and lay out a circuit for you but lets just say are shorts ok for kuulu valley in mid april? id like to travel as high as leh.

man, i hate long pants!

thanks!

Question

I've been wondering about this, too. My Rough Guide reckons that shorts are frowned upon even in boiling April heat.

Please tell me this isn't right?

I can't stand long trousers when it's boiling, either.

dont worry about 'offending locals'. shorts below the knee are no problem. ive been travelling a decade and never caught so much as a sneer -even in morocco! no matter what the pc books say.

im just worried about comfort.

guidebooks aer full of rubbish and often if one writes it, the others take as gospel.

think of all the stupid wacky outfits youve seen foreigners wear while travelling. by my mind, THAT is insulting.

What's the weather like in Ladakh in June? I'm going to the Thangka festival in Hemis and can't decide what I should have with me.

Well , I disagree. Meetings are warmer when we try to find out how you do to be ... nice, basically. Learning some basic phrases and trying to dress with decorum when visiting temples etc. is not a threat to my independence, it´s just basic respect (the same way I did`nt enter the Notre Dame in T-shirt and shorts).
Sure, we`re bound to pronounce somethings wrong and come off awkward in some situations - but it`s the attempt that counts and , in my experience, gives a better start for any meeting.

Ladakh in June is summery in daytime, thin pants and a shirt is quite sufficient when it`s not windy. Jacket & light sweater for evenings/mornings. Sun is incredibly strong; cap with a goodsized visor is a minimum. Being nice at a festival means long pants & shirtsleeves and tucked in feet (also see this

photo , part of a good article.

During the day light clothing is fine
However for the night wear a jumper or buy a kulu waistcoat and a blanket and wrap yourself in the blanket
Ladakh can be cold at anytime of the year especially at night
If you're wearing shorts make sure you wear tons of suncream ..the sun is unbelievably strong ...I already had a dark tan and got burned so beware ..Shorts should be cool otherwise just be conservative when entering monastaries and temples other than that i dont see the problem ...loads of Indian tourists wear shorts ...

I could do with some advice as well. We're going to India at the beginning of July so it'll be the start of the monsoon. We're spending time in Delhi and trekking in the Himalayas. I dont want to take too much but the weather could turn from one extreme to the next. Plus we've got to be in keeping with the culture. Any advice?

The bare essentials :
Good raingear (when not in the moonsoon shadow)
(wacky) zip off pants
Cap with large visor
sleeping bag liner , with or without sleeping bag
broken in footwear

The rest is easily found as you arrive.
