Charger or batteries?

Bringing along my mobile for a multimonth trip - but should I bring the bulky charger to plug in, or stick with a battery-powered charger? Are Indian batteries cheap, plentiful and reliable?

They are a cruel joke, most of the time.

Depends, I guess, on what sort of batteries you need.

My digi-cam uses 2 AA batteries, and the charger is about the size of a deck of cards so it was no problem to bring it along.

Indian power is 230/250V AC, so you'd need a stepdown transformer/adapter, which you can pick up from any electronics shop before you leave.

Most places I stayed at had multi-style power points, but if you find the plug for the transformer doesn't fit you can get little adapter plugs for Rs25 quite readily in India.

Depending on how long you're away, you might just reconsider using batteries instead of lugging adapters and chargers around with you. Load the camera with good quality alkalines before you leave and take a spare set.

I had better luck with just going to an electronics shop in India and picking up adapters while I was there. My Radio Shack converter that I brought with me didn't seem to work correctly.

Found one universal adapter off the shelve that fit my cd player and my speakers and probably would have fit any mobile phone.

It was a little pricey (like 300 rupees) but still the same price I would pay back home and worked like a charm.

It was a Panasonic adapter btw.

230 volts
round pins - two or three (for grounding)...you can easily get flat pins to round converters in India - very cheap too..maybe Rs. 25.
Check your charger and see if it says 110-240 v, 50-60Hz...most do if they are AC chargers (for digital camera, laptops, etc.). Usually DC chargers are more problematic (cell phone chargers mostly). Either way, you can get little step down transformer chargers in India (again cheap...same quality as Radio Shack).

In the shops in the US there are various types of stepdown converters and transformers of various wattages. Some say they are for electric devices, but not electronic. Others say they are not for laptop computers. How do you know what is the right kind?
