Carrying on my backpack?

I'm going to India in June and this will be my first time to travel with backpacks (instead of suitcases).

I'll have a daypack and a 3,000 cubic inch ruckpack (which will be my main luggage while there). I'm flying Alitalia. I know I'm fine carrying on my daypack, but would a 3,000 cubic inch pack typically fit in the overhead compartment?

Thanks for the help! This is a GREAT website!

Whether it will fot overhead, will depend on the dimensions of the pack -- not volume..

From a travel websitem "The safe maximum size is 45", in the form of a 22" x 14" x 9" bag. Some airlines allow up to as much as 55", but most do not."

The dimensions are calculated byt adding up the lenght, breadth and height of your luggage. If your bag was a cube, then it would be 14X14X14 which adds up to 42"

For those interested, 3,000 cubic inches converts to ~48 litres.

Be aware that European airlines allow VERY, VERY low weights on carry-on items. From Alitalia website: (http://www.alitaliausa.com/informati...tion/index.htm)

You are allowed to carry only one piece of hand luggage onboard which must not exceed the following dimensions (including handles, side pockets and wheels):
Weight: 5 kg
Length: 55 cm
Height: 25 cm
Depth: 35 cm

So if all your luggage weighs more than 11lbs, you're checking in something. On flights out to/from the US, they usually cut some slack, but Europe-India, not necessarily. Oh, and the dimensions translate to 22x10x14 inches.

I managed on my last mountaineering trip to push a 50lt bagpack in the overhead : if it is too big, just smile to the stewardess and she will put it with hers or the captains : these things can happen ;-)
