Buying Art Supplies in India? Hello! I am new to the forum, but y'all seem very helpful! I am moving to Bangalore by the end of this year for at least two years, and am figuring what to/not to take. I do a lot of drawing and am learning oil painting. My question is, what kind of artist supplies are available in India? Such as: Charcoal and graphite pencils, India-ink drawing pens, and oil painting supplies (paints, thinner, oil, easel, canvas?). All of these things could take up a lot of room, so if they're available I don't want to waste space, but if not, I very much want to have them. Thanks for your help! --Jyoti.

I am just back today from a 6 week time in So. India. I was painting in pastels and my friend was using oils. We are both professional painters. She found solvent in many cities, though we had to ask around and the quality was crude, but she mostly needed it to clean her brushes. We found that there are some art supplies available in large towns/cities and I am sure in Bangalore you'll find things. I looked for a new sketchbook in Mysore and couldn't find anything satisfactory, but I didn't pursue it too much. I know you can get good supplies in Mumbai. I also found that pastels were completely unknown to almost everyone. If you plan to work in that medium, you'll have to bring your own supplies. Painting en plein air in So. India was a real experience and I loved it! I'm hoping to post my pictures here when I get everything settled down now that I'm back.

Thanks! Thanks for the help! I don't do much in pastels--mostly pencil. I'm just starting oil painting, so am not too picky yet about what I like to use. If I can get basic supplies, I'll start with that. I can always get stuff from the States later. Fortunately, I'll be in Bangalore long enough I'll be able to search around 'til I find what I want, and I have friends in Mumbai so I'll be there occasionally.

You can find loads of art/stationary/materials shops along Ebrahim Saheb Street (one end of the road have lots of tailor shops, and the other end is what you are interested in). Its easy to get to this road as its parallel to commercial street and a short walk from Shivajinagar bus terminal. Afterwards, post up some of your art work of India on the forum ![]()
