buying a used car in India
I am planning to travel from Delhi to Kolkata via a few cities in between. The plan popped-up in my head to buy a second-hand car in Delhi, drive to Kolkata and sell it there. I know that the driving conditions are pretty extreme in India. I would like to know if somebody (non-Indian) has experience with driving in India (is it ok or will I be suicidal to drive Indian roads by car). And also some info about buying used cars in Delhi. Much appreciated....

Chapati, if you are visiting India on a tourist visa you are not eligible to buy or sell a car.

I met some tourists in Kerala last year who had hired a self-drive vehicle.
They were notching up cyclists who ride in the dark with no lights ![]()

Quite a lot of people used to drive overland from europe and of course you gradually acclimatised and adapted your driving skills accordingly.
But to arrive in India as a first timer & consider driving even if you were allowed (as GoanCanuck mentioned) would be crazy. Don't know the insurance implications, but I'm sure if you had an accident with a person or someones cow your situation would be Dire,,,,,,,,,,,,, |

1.You cant register a car in India with out a residential permit.
2. You are from a country where the driving is left hand side. I tried driving in Spain but gave up immediately. 3.The route from Delhi to Kolkata is thru Bihar, although I had wanted to do it myself but couldnt gather the guts to drive through highways in Bihar. So in my opinion you should better not try. |
