Budget for India

Hello,

I hope this is the right place to post! I'm coming to India in Feb. 08 and with the weakening dollar I'm not sure what I should budget for daily. I plan on staying in simple places, how much do you think I will spend daily? (Mumbai, New Delhi, Varanasi, Jaipur)
Thanks for your advice!

I think about $300 a day should see you by fine.

... Sorry, I'm pulling your leg. Please do some research. There's nothing to say about it just like that.

Try How to get the most out of the Itinerary section. , India a price guide!! , and note their posting dates, and remember they can only serve as very general guidelines.

btw None of the places you've listed are very "simple" as such. They're also far apart. Have you looked into a guidebook or something? As I usually say: Try to look up India on a map that shows it on the same scale as your home country. And bear in mind the infrastructure and speed of transport may not be what you're used to.

Sambaqueen, you might try looking at a guidebook and raising all the prices by 50%.

I say 50% because the dollar is down 25% from what it was a couple of years ago, and the guidebooks have at least a one-year lag time between research and publication.

When I was there in 2003, I spent around $12/day in small towns (none on the list you've given), so I would expect to spend around $20/day this year. ... and that is with very low-cost accommodations.

Mumbai has the most expensive hotels in India, as far as I know; the "budget" places there are at least twice what you would pay in Delhi, which is also expensive.
