I'm going into Bombay in 2 days and I will bring cash to change at the airport. As I understand - that is the way it should be done. Be aware of your cash advance fee on your credit cards. They tend to differ a bit from card to card and can be as much as 10 USD.

Yes, I should have said, "without declaring it."

The rupee is supposed to become fully convertible sometime soon, which means banks will be able to trade it. But the rupee isn't exactly an investor's currency of choice . . .
