If I don't have a bottle opener, I just use any 90 degree angle. Lean it against the edge, and palm the top, downwards, and voila! Make sure the surface is clean too. Oh here comes the city-bashing from the country hicks.

I'm not really into city slicker bashing but I will make an exception for New South Welshman because I think from memory he follows the Canberra Raiders.

Go the South Sydney Rabbitohs

By the way old mate we should have an IMERS meet up in Sydney some time. I get to Sydney quite a bit for work. I usually stay at the Meriton World Tower in Liverpool St?

Essex girls never use their teeth --- just their lips.

And they don't consider a kiss to half-decent if they can't spit out one or two of the guy's teeth afterwards.

I'm sure CharleneDD could confirm this!

Preferred method here, mostly handy for smokers I reckon. Note of caution: If the lighter cracks it may well explode in your face.

OH my...should I be considering this as a purchase?? Is this to test the outlets in hotel rooms?!?

I think we have a swiss army thingy. So hopefully it will open a thumbs up or whatever else comes our way. Gee whiz! JUST when I thought I had my packing list squared away!!! :-)

What as it that we always seem to be able to turn serious threads into silly ones and the other way around.

Take an A4 piece of paper. Fold it five times through the middle and than twice in the length and use this as an opener. I'm working on the pictures.

It's not a bad idea in India - I pack a small multimeter to test what's spewing out of the electrical outlets ..... if anything at all ..... before I venture to plug anything of any value into those nasty little black holes.

OK, this will turn into a "Usefull things to take to India"-thread, will it?

PeakXV, you're virtually in the lead

Nah, more like the "how do I open that f**king bottle" thread.

I agree though, no matter what I do and wherever I go I tend to oversee the problem. Last time I'd forgotten about modern restrictions and so had my swiss army knife confiscated, hadn't given it much thought anyhow. (Me: can't I retrieve it on my return? A: No. Sure enough, there was some recent news item about annual sales of "left" goodies at my airport.)

In any case opening a drinkie the first days turned out to be a problem once again. (Funny enough on a recent court visit despite being checked for the usual rings and stuff I walked through clean accidentally carrying the sturdy replacement I got me. I suspect I'll lose it on the next flight, I just tend to not be mindful of such things.)

btw Caps I can deal with, corks are harder though. Something pointy and something hard will help, however you risk smashing the top to pieces, besides I don't normally travel around carrying a screwdriver and hammer (which you probably can't carry anyway, etc. etc.)

Bottle of wine without an opener:

Take a pen, remove the capsule for the bottle, carefully place the pen on the cork and than ram it down with your hand. Protect your hand with a handkerchief, t-shirt or whatever.
