Body scrub - bring or not?
I am coming to chennai in Feb, and hear it's really hot.
How about bringing the body scrub? is that a bad idea? Just wanted to keep my body clean and smooth, which feels good, at least while i stay at the hotel at evening/night/the next morning. But then, considering the hot weather, whether i would be better off without bothering to bring one... i was wondering. jin *please take into account i've got a partner there. *cough* and me..happened to be a girl..*cough, cough* |

If that's the only your in doubt about, than why don't you just bring it
(an ayurvedic oilmassage will make your body also very soft and smooth) Hans

what is a body scrub exactly? Do you mean something like a loofah/sponge or some shower gel/scrub kind of thing?
anyway... cant see why bringing either of those will be a problem..... The "Indian" way of relaxing after a long hot day is to take a bucket bath in cool water stored in the buckets since morning (running tap/shower water will get heated up during the day and be uncomfortable to bath in)with soap..... dry yourself under the fan and liberally use talcum powder afterwards (and some flower garlands in the hair) ![]() |

By 'body scrub' do you mean that partner you mention?
Really a very puzzling post. Don't know if you mean soap, bottled stuff, luffah, scrubing brush ...or what? My advice on toiletries: you can buy everything here (and there will be stuff in most hotel rooms anyway) but only a very limited selection. If you have any skin sensitivites, or just regard the smell or sensation of your favourite bath stuff or shampoo --- then bring some with you. Relaxing with that familiar smell maybe just what you need after a hard day's exploring to set you up for another one! I think you asked about Chennai temperatures in another thread? February will be hot, but not really hot or really, really hot. I have another theory, which many people find hard to believe, but it works for me... a hot shower is always more refreshing than a cold one. I actually feel cool after it, even in a Chennai May! A hot bath, however, in this climate is a horrible, sweaty thing.

Anyway, thanks Nick-H. That helps a lot. I am indeed glad to hear that it's not really or really, really hot. Besides, more importantly, your theory is in fact quite valid. I read it somewhere before. I guess it's related to adjusting your body to the temperature. Thanks all, I am very looking forward to being in Chennai. jin |

I would advise using the body scrub at night -- because you will definitely need to shower at night to get rid of the day's sweat and dust and grime on your skin.

Gram powder (available at most food shoppes) makes a fantastic body scrub (mixed with water to make a paste) and is very cheap to boot.

guess I am falling in love with all these quick - quite quick - replies.
Exfoliating the skin is a mundane activity for Koreans. Um... I actually just got back from the bathhouse and my skin feels like a cotton candy. My worried mom says with unsubtle sarcasm : "why don't you just wash off the dirt in the River Ganges with the myriad of Indian friends?" |

Sure, bring your body scrub.
I found that drying with a rough Indian towel after my shower did the same job for me. ![]() |

Until the mention of nationality I almost thought this was a rare troll for this site. But be sure to bring anything important to you. However, if it reaches the scale of one family I met on the way into India with blenders and aluminum foil and several hunderd pounds overweight, its a bad sign..

I'm sure I'd get a ribbing from the boys, but I use a body scrub type of thing on my body, especially around the feet and and hands, where my skin feels like hell. I also use it with those nylon sponge thingy-majigs. I'm taking both to India, because I know I'll be doing alot of walking.

I bring a small amount of things I think I can't live without and almost never use any of it. I find the huge variety of soaps in India are excellent and I like the shampoos also. So I leave behind my "home stuff" and bring home lots of new Indian stuff. I even bring those little packets of shampoos as gifts. At home I've got lots of lotions and potions but I find that while I'm "on the road" just taking a shower after a hot, sweaty, dirty day is all I need.

I agree Camelgirl. My boyfriend was going on and on about the amount of toiletries I brought to India and made him carry until I corrected him and said I didn't bring much, but I bought a whole bunch along the way.

Too bad all that fun stuff is so heavy! I had a whole bag of little shampoo packets at the end of my trip. The shopkeeper wanted to sell me a big bottle but I wanted some of ALL of them so bought the little packets. |
