Blankets or bathing costumes?....Jumpers or Jackets?

We are a family of 4 struggling to pack light. The packing tips are great but whilst no-one can really predict the weather, we could do with some help as to what to take for the various places we are visiting having some consideration for the weather.

1 November - 2 nights in Dehli
3 November - 3 nights Jaipur
6 November - 2 nights Ranthambhore 4 safaris - 2 in the mornings)
8 November - 1 Agra
9 November - overnight train to Varanasi(sleeper class)
13 November - overnight train to Kolkata (sleeper class)
15 November - Andaman Islands for rest of trip

We are taking a couple of blankets and snorkeling gear. We will also have slr camera equipment.

Our luggage pile is growing by the day (we have started packing as a test for weight etc)

A light Patagonia style all weather jacket is a valuable piece of clothing. Are you taking serious heavy duty snorkeling gear ? I wonder if you could just rent it in the place you intend to snorkel ?

Unless you are camping; most places you stay should provide you with blankets. They even supply it on AC/2 coaches in overnight trains.

What a lovely trip you have planned.
The only time I am seeing jumpers needed are the Ranthambore safaris it is very cold at first on the morning ones. The hotels give you blankets but a hat and a scarf are good ideas. Plus a warm fleece.
For travelling the train can be a bit chilly sometimes. I always take shawls. You could buy them in Delhi at Sarojini Nagar. Wool ones. Cheap and if you don't want to take them home you could donate to the street kids before you leave for the Andamans.
Much easier than bringing blankets.

Thanks nycank, we all have microlight fleeces as opposed to all weather jackets - I wish we had Patagonia ones, maybe next year,(our other outdoor walking jackets are too heavy to take).

From previous advice we know the snorkeling gear for hire on Neil Island is not the best and the children have their own fitted masks.

Again, checking the threads no-one seemed sure whether blankets would be provided on the train but I think we may leave blankets behind and buy them when we are there if we feel cold at night.

Thanks Kate, the shawls sound good, I will make a note of Sarojini Nagar and we would be more than happy to leave them with the street kids. We intend bringing hat and scarves, we can also leave those behind. Our girls seem to lots of scarves/hats!

On trains I took in Feb 09; Blankets were provided in 2AC Sleeper at night. Do not know if you are taking an overnight in an AC 2 Sleeper.

In Sleeper class (code: SL), as opposed to AC 2 tier or AC 3 tier or any other AC coach, no bedding is provided. No blankets, no sheets, no pillows. And it will be chilly, especially in the north of India, in November/December/January.

What is your class of travel?
As wildhorse says - you wont get bedding in SL class.
In all higher classes(3AC, 2AC, 1AC) you will definitely get bedding and blanket.

We are travelling overnight sleeper class, so should we bring blankets, buy them in India or will fleece and thick socks do?

Fleece and thick socks would probably do in terms of temperature, but I like to be inside or under something when in sleeper class so i take a lightweight sleeping bag. It's also useful in some hotels if the sheets seem a bit iffy.

Hope this isn't making it even more complicated for you! A blanket or big shawl would do the job too of course.
