Best quality long underwear I can buy?

Hi, I am looking for a very good quality wool long underwear. I currently use Le grand brand top but it feels itchy. Can you suggest some high quality brands. thanks.

Cheers,
Huzefa

Howdy Huzefa~

merino wool is the way to go in general.

i don't know what your budget is, or if you are happy to buy it over the internet & have it shipped, but icebreaker out of new zealand is a GREAT brand, although quite spendy.

i also have some "merino skins" from australia and they are plenty good, although somehow not QUITE as smooth. better price though, i think.

good luck staying warm!

Re: Merino

Thanks for the info. Merino skins are reosonably priced. I stumbled upon an ebay auction on new merino skins:

Are they the same thing? 40AU$ for 100% Merino is a great deal.

they appear to be the "merino skins" i was referring to, and that does look like a good deal.

do you know what kind of wool is in the Le Grand top that was itchy to you?

Serious question - do you find woolen long underwear to be warmer than silk? or are there other reasons you seek it out?

I am very enthusiastic about silk for warm underwear and usually travel with it. It's not too hard to find at good prices, either. I like it because it is so weightless to carry, and also pleasant next to the skin.

Not doing much sleeping on mountainsides these days, but I was sooo happy at a recent wedding in Rajasthan in freezing temperature (all outdoors, whole 48 hour thing) with my silk longjohns under my best Indian wedding wear.

The IndiaMike Underwear thread.

Whatever next?

So Neeli... when are you posting the pictures of you in your silk longjohns?

And yes... I am being unashamedly and totally sexist in not extending the same request to the gentlement to show off their Merino Wool!!!!!

Haha, never, but if my post has reminded you of any exhibitionistic dreams of your own, I hope you will find a way to realize them!!

Is silk long underwear a new idea for you? skiiers have worn it for a long time I think. Somebody gave me a featherweight silk undershirt from Switzerland a long time ago, I wore it to shreds; since then I've found really cheap replacements, like usd 10.

Of course, longjohns will make it difficult with sinks.

ooh, you all are thinking of all-in-ones. I am not.

I think of the thing you are thinking of as a sleeping garment only!! actually - a sleeping garment I mostly have seen on a cartoon character, so I will recuse self from convo.

From my sailing days, I can say that natural fibres have long since given way to synthetics in what has become the science of 'high performace' underware...

EDIT... I mean -wear!

Underware? must have computer operating systems on my mind somehow . Strip that machine right down and reload its underware!

Sometimes my own weirdness worries me....

i've used and enjoyed synthetics for quite a while, in some quite cold climes, but all of my recent purchases in that area have been natural: wool and silk. plus a little down.

silk is obviously lighter weight. and it does feel better next to the skin. i use it as a base layer, with the wool on top, or either the silk or wool by itself, depending on the situation.

that's my two cents!

Somewhat off-topic, I believe the Hillary expedition to Everest wore long-johns knitted from Shetland wool. Shetland sheep were not sheared - the whole fleece can be pulled off whole at the appropriate time, and consequently the yarn had a reputation for being very comfortable and non-itchy (no stubbly cut ends.)
