Bedding in S. India, April/May

Wow, i LOVE this website.

i'll be in south india, probably primarily around pondicherry (maybe mysore...), probably primarily ashrams / budget accommodations.

i think i'll need to bring at least a sheet, true?

one of those silk ones?

can i buy that easily in bangalore?

They have sheets and blankets in India.

I don't know that I would want to sleep under silk in the heat of April and May; you may want to consider a mosquito net, however.

Pondicherry in April/May? Phew! Mysore, Bangalore, should be less unkind, climate-wise.

Suggest AC rooms anywhere in TN during the next two or three months--- and then the sheet might be nice.

I would avoid silk, and carry two cotton sheets and maybe a couple of pillow covers if I used them.

Cotton is much better in summer. And very easily available.

and warning noted re. pondicherry's heat. not too stoked about that, but do want to visit there.

on a side note, regarding travel bags:

i'd like to bring my leatherman for all of it's uses, but otherwise wasn't planning on checking my bag.

i'm flying BA, via london to banaglore (no other stops).

any thoughts on that?

One more side note, still regarding bags:

i'm hoping to travel light & reckon i can fit all of my gear in a medium sized backpack (2200 cu. in. / 36 liters) & if/when i overflow it with things i buy in india i'll buy a little duffel or something.

anything wrong with this plan?

BA and Heathrow means manic security. No Leatherman tool, unless checked in

But your TSA is even worse, isn't it?

i wasn't clear with my question.

let me try again:

if i bring the leatherman, i will need to check my bag. otherwise, i will not check it.

how often does luggage at BA/Heathrow get lost/delayed and is it worth checking my bag just to have my leatherman?

Heathrow........ It is absolute hell , jobsworth staff are rude, dont care,should be avoided like the plague

1st re sheets, buy a Lungi or 2, one to lie on and one to wrap round yourself, about 100/- each.

Recently Heathrow has lost thousands of bags, 5000 of which were sent by lorry to Milan, to be reunited with their owner, whether that has happened or not yet I dont know.

I dont know why you want a leatherman anaway, there are very good ironmongers in most towns, and you should be able to get any tools pliers screwdrivers you may want, and throw away on leaving

Is it worth having the leatherman? I always used to bring at least a pocket knife, and a small key-chain-but-usable multi-tool. Negligible weight compared to the leatherman, but still useful.

Even a pair of nail scissors would need to be checked in these days, and nail scissors, nail file, would always be in my bag.

BA (I recently read somebody say that it stands for Baggage Afterwards!) have never, so far, lost any of my luggage. They have postponed until June (no date given) the transfer of long-haul flights to Terminal 5, which debacle of a terminal is what has been responsible for the events FSQ tells of --- at one point 28,000 bags delayed and separated from their owners.

Size and shape of accepted carry-on baggage is critical: you might have to check your pack in. Packs I know nothing of: in my language, baggage is something one wheels to the car or auto, never something to be picked up and carried! I don't travel light!

Another reason for not carryin-on a pack may be the security searches into its depths.

Heathrow you will probably transit (hopefully) without seeing your baggage at all. I haven't fared badly with staff at Heathrow, but I've only had one return trip in the last two years. It used to be my home airport, I guess I'm used to it. I'm not looking forward to the T5 experience though, even though I'm unlikely to be there for another year!

Lunghi/vesti/dhoti --- yes it is a good idea; very practical things, but just to clear up the terminology, at least in Tamil Nadu...

Lunghi is a stitched loop of fabric, usually coloured. Not good as a sheet.

Vesti is a 4 yard length that is wrapped around the waist. Good for sleeping on/under also. See my profile pic for wearing.

Vestis are sometimes called dhotis, but really the dhoti is longer for that between the legs and tucked in at the back look.

I'm a bit worried the backpack I used in Europe is now too big and must be checked, but otherwise, I packed for six weeks in Europe a little under 20 lbs of stuff in a backpack. My back isn't great anyway, but I have always been a light packer and figured the less I brought the better. And I do plan to buy another piece of luggage and fill it with souvenirs before I leave.
