batteries on plane?

Hi...can I take batteries (AA, AAA, etc) on the airplane (for my MP3 player)?

I heard that the Indian Officials may take your batteries (they did take mine 12 years ago).

Thanks.

I'm wondering this as well. One of my two digital cameras runs on AAs -- the other runs on a proprietary Lithium Ion battery. Would I have to remove these and put them in checked luggage?

yes that was true a decade ago, but nowadays it should be no problem. At least there was none last year...

It would seem to depend completely on how diligent the security personnel are at the airports. I don't think it has anything to do with the specific airline. We made seven or eight flights in India with Jet Airways, and, if memory serves, had the batteries taken out of our cameras at two places: Leh and Varanasi. In both cases we were able to reclaim them at the end of the flight.

When did they take them? After you checked luggage? Or were they held by flight attendants in another area of the plane for reclaiming?

I may not check bags at all -- or if I check my bags and later pass through security with my carry-on bags, how would I be able to reclaim any confiscated batteries? Sorry so many questions.

Check out the replies on the thread "batteries and airports" - this seems to be a constant question.

I am troubled about it again myself, since we're now traveling with digital cameras for the first time. I'm worried about the batteries in the cameras in addition to the AA and AAAs for all the music and PDA gear we bring. We didn't have any trouble before, but...

I have had to remove batteries from my check in luggage (thanks air india) before. I suspect they have aproblem with loose batteries. But not with those "concealed" in your device.

I Travelled with Turkish Airlines 18 months ago and while in check in queue at Heathrow an official was telling people in queue to take batteries out of camera's walkman's etc.. I didnt take any notice and left my batteries in and this was not challenged at any stage. I think a few airlines were hot on this after 9/11 but seem to be more relaxed now.

Jet Airways battery policy

In reply to a specific question by email to Jet Airways, I received the following reply on November 14, 2005:
With reference to your mail this is to inform you that you are not permitted to carry batteries in your hand baggage. We do not allow passengers to carry batteries or any other sharp objects in their hand baggage, but they may carry the same as part of their checked in baggage.

Of course this doesn't tell us anything about what happens in the real world.

Usually batteries inside any camera / walkman or similar equipment is permitted but not seperately for carry on baggage but the opposite for checked in baggage. In the checked in bags keep the batteries outside the equipment. The rules keep changing depending on the place and the person checking too so it is always better to take them along and if asked to remove them, then comply accordingly.

Cheers,
Aadil.
