Ahh India... He saw the batteries on the xray and got me to take them out of my camera and speakers and put them into my hand luggage. Saw the NiMh batteries as well, but did nothing about them.

The posters we saw in the airports we went through [Jodhpur, Jaipur, Khajuraho, Varanasi] prominently listed batteries among the forbidden items.

For our first flight I removed all batteries from all devices [camera, CD player, headphones etc.] and put them in our checked luggage; except I left 2 AAA batteries in each of our 3 PDA's. We sailed through security with no problem.

For our next flights, I left all batteries in place. Again, no problems.

On our last flight, the hand search, after we went through X-ray, turned up a package of AA batteries buried and forgotten in my husband's camera case. The security woman didn't seem to care and put them right back in.

I really think it is a case of profiling. I was so busy asking them to hand check our 64 rolls of film that they probably figured we were OK. Plus, I have white hair. But if you look like you might get up to mischief, they're apt to bust your chops.

The posters at IGIA, Amritsar and Chandigarh airports do not mention batteries.
