What it costs really depends on your level of travel. You can stay in really posh hotels and spend hundreds of dollars (US or Aussie) per night for a room, or you can find a room in MOST (but not all places) for US$5.00/night or even a bit less than that. Dormitory accommodations could be even less expensive. Food can be cheap or expensive. Airfare is almost always expensive.
I suggest that you borrow a Lonely Planet Guide from the library, and figure out where to want to go, then look at the listed prices for hotels in those areas.
Outside the biggest cities, which are always pricey, I probably averaged somewhere between US$12 and US$20 per day.... and that would include food, hotel, train fares, cigarettes, and admission fees to monuments. I do not drink, so it does NOT include beer.

Oh yea, thanks for the help..so im guessing about $4000 AUD would be around a brief price for a month there..im guessing flights would be about $2000, and yea i would be wanting to stay in cheap accomodation..not posh hotels
You can get flights cheaper than that - depending where you're flying from and who you're willing to fly with. China and Sri Lankan airlines are a couple of the cheapest, I think about $1500.
$2500 (even in Aussie $$) would be tons for a month in India, depending on how you're planning to get around and what kind of hotels you're staying in. You could get by on about $30 a day if you're not staying too long in major cities, so it's not too expensive once you're over there.
Better to save up extra though, makes it easier to upgrade things if you're finding it harder than you thought (and if not, leaves you with more money for souvenirs etc!)

o0o Cool, this is helping me heaps like since the flight is so cheap i dont wanna spend only 1-2 weeks there, id rather get a decent stay worth for the money of the flight..just interesting what do i need passport? visa? or whats the go and whats the average price of them? Maybe i can go sooner than i wanted..hehe
There's some useful info for you at this site - http://smarttraveller.gov.au/
Passport = $172 (but valid for 10 years)
Indian Visa = $75 (valid for six months, single entry)
Insurance for a month costs around $100-200 depending on your cover and the company you go through..

Hi drewgon
In 2 months I spent about 750CHF (1CHF~=1AUD) and I didn't feel like a poor chap. With this budget we even allowed us some luxuries, like eating out at some fancy hotel restaurants.
For accomodation we stayed at budget places and mostly used public transport and we didn't stay long in the big cities.
Your budget surely allows you a very comfortable stay.
