Backpackers Travel Insurance? Recommendations?
Would anyone recommend a backpackers travel insurance? There are so many out there it's difficult to choose. Some of them are ridiculously expensive and very few provide adequate cover for personal belongings. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

www.worldnomads.com Seems to have a cheap travel insurance and not to many strange exclusions in their policy.

I always carry a small Ganesh statue with me as travel insurance .
It has kept me out of trouble. (sorry for joking, well not really hee hee) Travel insurance really sound extravagant to me? I'm not sure I would take anything traveling to India that would even need insuring? Except maybe myself? Then again, I always make sure my will is in order before leaving the country...

Well I certainly wont be going without travel insurance! Medical cover is essential. Most policies I looked at only had about £500 for belongings - that's pretty miniscule I reckon, considering I will be carrying things like a digital camera & MP3 player. They alone would be worth more than that, to say nothing of cash, clothing, etc.

I agree the world nomad policy seems like a very fair deal!! Their coverage for luggage is around 1030 GBP, they also a seperate deal where you can cover yourself for the ipod and digi camera etc.
Take a look Cost of policy per year around 250 GBP If you decide to use this company may I suggest you book via the LP website as they are running a compitition for people who book insurence with World Nomads via the LP prize a 4000 dollar travel pack including an ipod!! You'll find the link here |

I booked it online from www.statravel.co.uk, UK only. The premium cover isn't much more than the cheap version and gives higher cover for most things.
I think I paid 238 for 8 months. Hmm that reminds me, runs out soon...shit... Like Anders says, don't expect much for valuables and expect it to be a pain. Just don't take many and take good care of them. In India, their value is not in the actual cost, its the fact that you cant replace them unless you are near a big city like Delhi or Mumbai. Even then its gonna be a right pain. If you are ever wondering about the value of insurance, Recently I was talking to a fellow traveller who knew a German who got popped out of the back of a shared taxi, Cambodia. He was sitting at the back and it went over a rock and ejected him, damaging his lower spine. He couldn't walk, might come back but he's still in a wheel chair. Forgot to renew his insurance and it had run out 2 weeks previously. Parents had to remortage their house to pay for evacuation to Thailand and medical care. |

Having returned from my travels my advice would be: DON'T insure with insureandgo!! I had a medical claim in India - and now, 7 months later I'm still arguing with the insurance company! They are a nightmare! I'm claiming a relatively small amount but they argue over pennies! It's ridiculous! Avoid this company at all costs!

I have my personal belongings insured as part of my 'House Contents' policy, only costs a few extra quid. (I made sure that I world-wide cover and anything valuable is itemised)

Has anyone had any experience of gapyeartravel.com or insurefor.com. They seem very cheap but I worry that this means they have very limited cover.
Thanks, Ben |
