Baby essentials, availability/cost in India.
Whilst packing I've realised that it's totally inconvenient to pack some large baby essentials, so can anyone tell me the cost and availability of the following items, also the quality and cost of their Indian equivalent.
Nappies Pampers/Huggies (Midi size - 4-9 Kg (9-20 lbs)) = Rs _____ (how many nappies?) Indian equivalent = Rs _____ Baby wipes (or wet wipes) Indian = Rs _____ (I'd guess the Indian ones are just as good) Milk formula SMA, Cow and Gate etc. = Rs _____ (what size? 900g? Imported?) Indian equivalent = Rs _____ (though I'm not too keen on changing her milk and will probably still take formula from England) We'll be staying in a touristy part of Goa, so availability is likely to be good. (I'm assuming) Thanks for any info. |

Baby stuff
Hi Steven,
Allthough our kids are a bit older, we took our own brand of night nappies to India. Fortunately they both decided to become night potty trained overnight in India, one of tghese other amazing things that seem to happen only in India . So we almost used none and used a whole package to wrap souvenirs in. We did see Pampers and Huggies in supermarkets in India, notably in Bangalore and Ernakulam. The prices were on par with Europe. The sizes weren't, I believer the biggest we saw was size 3 (pampers). Probably babies are a lot smaller in India then in the West (or they are trained at an earlier age).I would advice you to take your own brand of formula (taste it before flying BA) as you will see that even the same brands may have different tastes for different markets.buy Indian wipes, don't remeber the price. baby wipes are also very good for claning feet after temple visits. Happy travels, Hans We did

Formula?!? Breast is best!!!
![]() (I know, I know... none of my business....) I have no idea, but I wonder if the ingrediants will be the same here, even if the trademark is? I'm sure you'll get the disposables, I saw someone buying a pile of them from a pharmacy here once. If you are staying in the same place long enough --- how about traditional old terry toweling nappies? At least you wouldn't have to wash them yourself. Just a thought.

Just bought sz 5 Pampers in Margao in the indoor market, and they were 200rs for 17 diapers. That equates to around $0.25/nappie. In the US I pay $0.21/nappie, so they are more here, and I had to barter for that price. Also, very few diapers are the paper type. Here the norm is a plastic outer layer, and I find that leads to more incidences of diaper rash. No one says you can open the pckgs., and their knowledge of paper or plastic is clueless for the most part. I usually look, and at times create, a small tear in pckg to see that they are the breathable type, b4 I buy. Also, Nick, I agree from firsthand knowledge, and a very healthy 28 mo. old...BREAST IS BEST!!

Kids are trained a lot younger in India. 1 year seems to be common.
