atm machines

The last time was in India I had a bit of a hard time using an ATM . When I put in my card and give my password, what do I do next if I wantto make a withdrawal (get cah From) from my checking account in the US. What are the different accounts that I might be asked to select from (In the US the choices are only saving and checking. What will I encounter (what will the screen say?) at an ATM in India?
Thank You
Larry

The choices are "Savings" and "Current".

The instructions are in English, so you should have no problems using the machines.

The ATMs belonging to HDFC work with the ATM cards of the 5 major Canadian banks. The ATMs belonging to ICICI and UTI don't work with every Canadian banks ATM card.

Since this is foreign terminology to me, can you explain--is Current the same as a checking account?

Thank You

Interesting,

I always used not savings and checking but credit option whenever I'm using ATM for withdrawals, checking my balance and putting money on account are out of question even in my country when I use rival banks' ATMs. I have Visa Classic card. Is it diffirent from yours?

Hi Larry!

Happy Christmas! (I have just woken up and come downstairs. I haven't even checked to see if Santa has been and I'm replying to a thread on IM. How sad is that?)

"Checking Account" is foreign terminology to me - what are you checking? You can check your account online or with an ATM

In India, a Current Account is used for business. In the UK, A Current Account is used by businesses and individuals, and it comes with an ATM card.

In India, a Savings account is used for personal banking. It comes with an ATM card and a cheque book. This is the account we use to withdraw cash from ATM's in India.

It's all very confusing - is there a Indian-English, English Indian/American-Indian, Indian-American Dictionary thread on IM? If not, maybe we should dtart one!

Many of the ATM's in India only "swipe" your card - i.e. you put it in a slot and pull it out before entering your PIN. therefore, if you select the wrong account it can't "confiscate" your card.

My hunch is that you should try the "Savings" option, and it that doesn't work, thry "Current".

Good luck!

John

maestro/cirrus debitcard

I am planning to rely on my debitcard with maestro/cirrus logo when getting cash out of the atm in India (next year, 3 years ago I used only travellerscheques). I've heard that this shouldn't be a problem in cities like Kolkata. But if I read these posts on this thread I am little confused. I assume in Canada you also have maestro/cirrus debitcards? I understand that you faced a lot of problems with your maestro/cirrus debitcard?

If you have a Maestro / Cirrus credit card or debit card then you should be fine at any State Bank of India (or it's subsidiaries like State Bank of Rajasthan or Mysore or whatever). This card is not accepted by some credit card accepting machines when you want to pay through them so it is a bit of a problem sometimes. It always helps to have a couple of different ones when you are travelling in a far off country. State Bank of India ATM's are in almost each and every place in India and has the widest network of ATM's in India so you should not have a problem at the ATM's atleast. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Aadil.

ATM at Delhi int. airport

I don't remember an ATM in Delhi international airport in 2003 (I cashed a travellerscheque with a bored "Thomas Cook" clerk at 5am). Does anyone know if this airport has an ATM these days which supports maestro/cirrus debitcards?

Your maestro/cirrus debit card will work at any ATM belonging to ICICI. The ICICI bank has one of the largest ATM networks in India.

Larry, a current account in India is the same as a checking account in the US or a chequing account in Canada.
