ATM/bank questions (3)
a few years ago when i was in india and using bak of india atm i had problems using my debit card (to pull from checking). i forget the option and was hoping someone would know..
i think it was something like 'other' (for debit/checking). next, i heard much about bank icici (or whatever, you get it) while outside india. can anyone speak to this banks atm's, fees (if any on debit card), svcs? finally, i seemd to gravitate to bank of india for atm use as i found them semi-consistantly while traveling. what do you use, sucesses? bank india took a torn note and helped me w/ atm machine - i was impressed by that as i have no acct with them. ***many persons posted about the plethora of atms in india (2 yrs back). i did not find this to be the case, esp coming from thailand. carry some cash! |

Hey GoanCanuck - which particular cards have you used in India? I'm thinking of taking traveler's cheques and a bit of cash for emergencies... |

If your card is linked to Cirrus then there are a lot of options in India ATM wise, I still say TCs are the easiest way of storing your money though even if it costs a little to buy them!!

Hum, my card is linked to Cirrus. That's good to know. I've heard it is fairly cheap to cash TCs in India. Would you recommend private changers? |

I always use private money changers, the wait at the bank is just too excruciating
There isn't a commission charge to cash them!! |

Only time I used TCs in two months last year was to pay a big bill at MPTDC office in Delhi. Otherwise used our trusty Nationwide (UK) debit card (linked to Visa system) which doesn't charge a fee on overseas transactions. Absolutely no problems, and better rates of exchange that we could have got in India on TCs.
But I still always carry some TCs in case of loss / theft etc; at least you know you can always replace them. Don't forget to carry a separate note of the numbers etc. |

[quote=GoanCanuck]The fee/charge is normally imposed by the bank in your home country who issued the debit card. The regular no-frill checking accounts in almost all banks in the US and Canada have the $3+ fee for each withdrawal in India.QUOTE]
no - my fee on one bank card is us1. cyberhippie: that is good to know. ive switched banks and the aforementioned card i keep scant money in it anymore - it is cirrus/star the card where the cash is stashed is plus/star/interbank can you or anyone comment on these networks in india? i gave up on tc's when during one buddhist new year water blast in laos they got wet....the ink is/was not indelible -oops. not to mention carrying a huge wad of checks. i really have become attached to plastic. |
