ATM/bank questions (3)

a few years ago when i was in india and using bak of india atm i had problems using my debit card (to pull from checking). i forget the option and was hoping someone would know..

i think it was something like 'other' (for debit/checking).

next, i heard much about bank icici (or whatever, you get it) while outside india. can anyone speak to this banks atm's, fees (if any on debit card), svcs?

finally, i seemd to gravitate to bank of india for atm use as i found them semi-consistantly while traveling. what do you use, sucesses? bank india took a torn note and helped me w/ atm machine - i was impressed by that as i have no acct with them.

***many persons posted about the plethora of atms in india (2 yrs back). i did not find this to be the case, esp coming from thailand. carry some cash!

Checking accounts are known as Current accounts in India. ICICI bank and HDFC bank are both private banks having a large network of ATMs all acrosss India. I am assuming that you want to use the debit card issued in your home country in these ATMs. The fees charged to withdraw money depend on your checking account in your home country. Most of the cards issued by North American banks incur a fee of $3-$5/withdrawal.

Hey GoanCanuck - which particular cards have you used in India?

I'm thinking of taking traveler's cheques and a bit of cash for emergencies...

If your card is linked to Cirrus then there are a lot of options in India ATM wise, I still say TCs are the easiest way of storing your money though even if it costs a little to buy them!!

Hum, my card is linked to Cirrus. That's good to know. I've heard it is fairly cheap to cash TCs in India. Would you recommend private changers?

I always use private money changers, the wait at the bank is just too excruciating

There isn't a commission charge to cash them!!

Really no commission? So they earn through the rate they charge? I've heard people say it's reasonable, so not too much to worry about. Are those private money changers frequently seen? In central areas?

The State Bank Of India (partial coverage)
ICICI
HDFC
UTI
HSBC
ABNAmro
City Bank

Are just some of the banks that accept cards linked to the cirrus system

Only time I used TCs in two months last year was to pay a big bill at MPTDC office in Delhi. Otherwise used our trusty Nationwide (UK) debit card (linked to Visa system) which doesn't charge a fee on overseas transactions. Absolutely no problems, and better rates of exchange that we could have got in India on TCs.

But I still always carry some TCs in case of loss / theft etc; at least you know you can always replace them. Don't forget to carry a separate note of the numbers etc.

The fee/charge is normally imposed by the bank in your home country who issued the debit card. The regular no-frill checking accounts in almost all banks in the US and Canada have the $3+ fee for each withdrawal in India. The exceptions are the premium checking accounts where you get unlimited free withdrawals as long as you have $3000-$5000(depending on the bank) at all times in your checking account.
