Question Bikinis at the beach?

I'm going to Kerala & would like to know if wearing a bikini on the beach is ok? What is ok to wear at the beach?

beach wear

Bikini's are fine in places like Kerela and Goa, as long as your a bit more modest away from the beach, t-shirts, sarongs shorts etc are all ok you shouldnt have any problems.

I have been told it's best to wear a sarong while swimming, but certain beaches are ok.
Maybe just pay attention to what the locals do and take their lead.
I am opting to cover up. We would probably get lots of stares just beacuse we are different so I dont want to encourage any more than that by showing some skin.

Are bikinis bad?

Hi there, we're having some beach time in Goa and Karnataka and really don't want to offend anyone when swimming. Was thinking a bikini and tshirt over the top would be ok.
Yeah?

Hiya FE!

I merged your post with this old one, because I think it would be interesting to hear a real update on bikinis!

Sheesh! This thread started 6 years ago!

Surely you can wear whatever, just have a sarong with you to cover up with, you know, keep your options open! (OK, a gross generalization....feel free to comment with recent info!)

Looks like bikinis are o.k. on Goa and Kerala beaches - although the t-shirt over the top idea sounds good to me!
Hotel swimming pools can be a different story - they all seem to have their own rules. Many will not let you swim with that t-shirt - they require a proper swimming costume. Pools where there are mainly foreigners - bikinis o.k. If there are lots of Indians swimming (I'm talking about out our way) then the one piece might be better - be prepared for a lot of ogling otherwise. Indian swimming costumes for women are extremely modest with little skirts etc. I've seen women with bikinis at both Rang Mahal and Gorbandh, and not disturbed by gawping men., because there the hotel owners have strict rules about staff not standing about. It all depends on the circumstances of the swimming situation.

Yes indeed! And might I add it's not only Indians who ogle at bikinis (this garment being unknown in their culture in many areas of India) -some men all over the world ogle whenever a bikini is worn! I think this is what you are hinting at, edwardesco??

Saw many women wearing them in Goa on the beach. Most of the locals seemed used to it , including the staff of the beach shack etc, the only people staring were Indian tourists..

But if Indian tourists were staring, doesn't that suggest that bikinis are not really appropriate, whether or not the locals have become used (or resigned?) to it?
