Amex TC Card or Visa TravelMoney
Hi, has anyone used an American Express Travelers Cheque Card or Visa TravelMoney before?
The Amex card does tack on an additional 2% to the exchange rate, while the Visa has a 7% charge (not to mention ATM fees). |

These both seem far too expensive!
Most people recommend that you withdraw rupees using your normal ATM Card.

Use ur normal ATM card preferably Visa Electron. You will pay a small fee for withdrawing money(I pay doing the same in Europe). So dont withdraw small amounts frequently. Bring a credit card too. Most establishments starting from the mid level upwards will accept CC payment.

yeah, atms are everywhere in bigger cities.
if you are going off the beaten track then just withdraw a bunch of cash before you go. i get charged like $2 US for using my atm card, so I try to avoid making frequent withdraws, also the atm booth is usually well-airconditioned ![]() |

I still bring travelers checks to places like India. I can get them free with my checking account here in the US and if you cash them at an AmEx office (in a big city) there usually isn't any charge. Or at a bank for a reasonable fee.
I also have an ATM card from an excellent bank called Bank of Internet ...it's a real, insured, U.S. bank, which gives back the $2 ATM charge, anywhere in the world. Used it in Singapore last month and was so happy to see the refund when I checked my account. I think a few other banks do that but I don't know which ones to recommend. Can't get used to ATMs in India or any developing country. Had one in Mexico eat my card and it kind of screwed things up because it was a weekend and could have made it impossible to get our money if we didn't have another card. |
