American or Canadian money or atm card?
Hi!
I'm Canadian, and going to New Delhi for a couple of weeks. I was wondering if any of you could advise me on what is the best way to bring money? Should I bring american cash money and exchange it at the airport? Or should I bring my ATM card and try to get some cash there? Will it work? Thanks for you help! |

Your ATM card is your best option followed by Canadian dollars. Don't bother about US dollars.
Canadian ATM cards work on ATMs belonging to HDFC which is the third largest bank in India. Always look for an ATM belonging to HDFC before using your card while in India. |

The Delhi Airport does not have a HDFC ATM as of now, but in the city of Delhi there would be plenty. Also check with your local bank if they have a tie-up with any Indian bank so that you are not charged any fees for withdrawing money.

Id wager that it has to do more with VISA than HDFC themselves. lol.
Do check up what your bank's service rates are

Visa has nothing to do with it because Canadian bank issued ATM cards are very unique in the fact that they do not have any tie up with either Visa or MC but use their own private network called Interac which is exclusively owned by the major Canadian banks. ATM cards from the US and Europe and other parts of the world use networks belonging to either Visa or Mastercard.

GoanCanuck - I'm sure you're right about Interac - but Canadian Banks belong to most of the other big ATM networks too. I've successfully used my Visa (Plus) and Mastercard (Maestro) cards in ATMs throughout Canada. The big networks which most Indian Bank ATMs accept include - Plus, Maestro, Star - and I'm sure many others as well.
In any country individual ATMs may refuse your card - and the causes are legion. Power outage, network break, poor connection, plain cussedness!!! So it's an excellent idea to have cash reserves always. |

That is completely different. For example ATM cards issued by Indian banks work on ATMs in Canada belonging to various Canadian banks without any problem. I have successfully used an international debit card belonging to Bank of Baroda on ATMs in Canada belonging to RBC which is the biggest bank in Canada but debit cards issued by RBC do not work on Bank of Baroda ATMs or any other ATM in India other than HDFC ATMs and Citibank ATMs. I have tried more than 10 different ATMs belonging to different Indian banks and the results have been identical.

You think that the recent RBI guideline that an ATM card from any bank should work at any ATM around the country would have changed something in this respect.
