I always take two or three small spirax notebooks. They come in handy for noting addresses, train departures, good restaurants, bus numbers, how much you owe your travel companion etc.

Hi Breeb,
Please add some serious woollen or down pullover / jacket and I hope you are carrying some rugged walking shoes too ? Cheers.

Head torch is a flashlight or torch that you can wear on your head. Extremely convenient because it leaves both hands free. I find mine invaluable when camping. I recommend getting the newer type that uses bright LED lights. They are bright, smaller, last longer and use fewer batteries.

Ive never been to India before but am going soon. Very excited but I have heard horrible stories about the toilets and was just wondering why you need shoes for the shower. And, what exactly are they? Plastic bags? Flip flops?!

Shoes for shower... rubber flip flops are fine and if you don't have any then you can buy a cheap pair in India. And why?... some of the bathrooms are not the cleanest and you don't want to be picking up foot germs... it depends a lot on how upmarket/downmarket the hotel is though.
