Am I forgetting anything?

Hi, I'm packing and sorta freaking out. Please help.

Paperwork
  • Passport with Visa
  • Money (a grand is enough for 2 weeks right?)

Electronics
  • laptop (though I don't know how to get internet once there but looking at past posts, its seems this can be done quite easily. Gosh, I hope so. I'm in school and I have papers I need to turn it during this trip.)
  • Digital camera
  • Kindle (didn't want to bring bulky books, I expect that I'll be using this for long flight from US as well as boredom)
  • Mp3 and IPOD

Comfort Items
  • Ear buds
  • Scented Handerchiefs
  • Dr. Scholl's foot inserts to put into my flats
  • 2 Rolls of Toilet paper
  • Immodium
  • Malaria pills
  • Advil
  • Eye mask
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellant
  • Giant bottle of Purell
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Lotion (my hands get super dry)
  • Sunglasses
  • peppermint tea bags (I exist in a perpetual state of nausea)
Clothing

Please note, I'm going to be in New Delhi, Agra, Chandigar (sp?), Jaipur and hopefully Amritsar the first 2 weeks of November).
  • one jean (which I guess I'll be wearing on the flight there)
  • one sweater (again on the journey)
  • 2 pairs of ballet flats (it'd be gross to wear flip flops. I'm sure my heels would be black at the end of the day with the dirt)
  • One long sleeve shirt
  • one pashmina (I heard I'm supposed to cover my head at times)
  • I was hoping mostly to buy clothing there

Okay, that's what I have on my floor right now. It's not a lot. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Glad that you are excited about the trip. A few observations based on your posts in this thread and another one that you started.

1. You are female - I see from another thread (Internet in Punjab) that you are married.
2. Your family is from Punjab - do you speak any of the local languages like Punjabi or Hindi?
3.You won't have time to do your papers for school on this trip.
4. You won't need a sweater.
5. You'll need more than one pair of jeans.
6. You can buy clothing/shoes/medicines/personal care items in India - no need to carry the whole pharmacy with you.
7. Carrying a laptop will be too heavy - run to the nearest electronic store and get your self the iPad/Galaxy/whatever .
8. One grand for 2 weeks is not enough, take two grand with you - prices in India have gone up tremendously.

Have fun - Mera Bharat Mahaan.

Cheers

Thank you Nattusbs!

Yes, I am female and married. Yes, I'm going to see family. Because I'm going to see family, I expect there will be some down time because they like to talk...a lot.

Since I don't speak Punjabi or Hindi, I expect that I'll be mostly uninvolved in these long talks hence the time to write papers would be available.

Ok, no fleece sweater but two pairs of jeans. I expect I'll be buying more meds when I get there if I need it but I won't leave the house without Advil or Immodium even in the US.

I'm not bringing a laptop but a small little net book. I should have clarified that.

I'm going with my mom so I'm hoping a grand will suffice...and also family is there so maybe they'll spoil me to make up the difference?

I thought the whole idea in India was NOT to show your figure... jeans doesn't seem a good idea to me. As you said, buying local clothes is the way to go.

As far as money.. I do not carry much of any money..not in my home country and sure as hack not in a land where everyone wants a piece of you. I have an atm card, it works the world over with zero fees. I take small amounts out of the account as I need. Yes, there are places were this is a challenge but I think it better than the alternative.

Jeans - quite common among young women in urban areas.

Like post #6 says things have changed in India and we have moved over to using ATMs, no lack of them and means that there is no need to carry a lot of cash on you.Less of a worry. We normally take a MasterCard and Visa card just in case.In any case a 1000$ (50000Rps)seems a lot of money for two weeks even for two people.

Jeans are fine. Do you have a day bag/purse? That would be handy when going out for the day. Also, you have probably already thought about it, but I didn't see toothbrush on your list. Feminine hygiene products, if you have a certain brand you prefer.

Have a wonderful time in India!

I don't think we're going to be in urban areas for some of it. That's why I'd rather have more cash than not have enough. We're going to a small town near Chandigra (sp?) after we land and so I'm not sure how soon we'll be back in New Delhi. Honestly, not even my mother knows what the plan is. We're following my uncle's lead. And he's coming from another country so shrug* I think we're winging it.

Oh yes, do bring your toothbrush and toothpaste. We do not have such things in India - just use the neem twing .

Come on, how silly can you be? Since you are traveling you do need these items, it is not something that one would list on things to carry (just like undies or the p word - these are assumed to be in your luggage). And yes, feminine hygiene products especially if you have specific brand requirements (in a good way actually - I don't have to go into more details). OK, I'll just shut up !!!

Happy Diwali to all.

Cheers

$1000 for two weeks is fine. Especially if your staying with family. I hope your not bringing all that money in cash? Use an ATM or change most to travelers checks.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be out of line. Some people list everything in the bags, and some people don't. I just thought if it was accidently left out, a reminder would be nice. And yes, of course such things are sold in India - I didn't say they weren't. It's just nice to have them on a 14 hour flight as well. Again, sorry if my answer offended anyone.

You surely did not offend anyone - no worries. I just thought it was a bit too much to list items that one generally takes on a trip anyways.

Btw, like your avtar!

Cheers
