This seems silly to post, but I have wondered and this seems to be the place to ask!
I have long thick curly hair. Is there anything I can buy in India? Gel, Mousse? Or do I just have to wear a bandana and hope for the best? Thanks!

Why? What will happen to your long thick curly hair?
Does India pose some strange threat to it? |

Only the other day a visitor told me that her hair had become much more frizzy within a day or two of landing here. I don't think she minded, though.
Bring along a bottle each of your favourite shampoo and conditioner, and budget enough to wash your hair every day. Wear one of those hats that stops the UV. All these things will help to preserve your hair and scalp from the dust and sun. |

If you are coming for a few weeks you could bring your own, maybe in smaller bottles, but really if it's longer than that I'd buy Indian products.

Product that might help
Like you, my daughter has thick curly hair. Before the trip, she had straightened it to make it easier to take care of on a long trip. But the morning after arriving in Kerala, it was curlier than ever--jsut as Nick H mentioned. The air didnt feel all that humid to us, but evidently hair has a mind of its own.
One product she purchased and used was a 20 Rupee bottle of pale green hair oil (dont know what's in it) called Marico Light Hair Oil. Great mild fragrance, light texture oil. It helped keep the frizzies under control. Defintely bring small bottles of hair conditioner. Some hotels provided small sample bottles of toiletries, including shampoo, but did not have hair conditioner such as in the USA hotels. |

I like to buy the 1 rupee packets and try every different kind of shampoo on offer. There are lots. They all smell good. I even bought some black shampoo for black hair. I have totally white/gray hair. It just lathered up white and my white hair was still white

Kerastase make a few products in Orange packaging, one called 'Elastocurl', which sort of defines and holds the curl after you apply it to damp hair -not that I have curly hair, but I use it and it doesn't seem to cause frizz, just gives some nice definition and smoothness (i could write a commercial for it ha ha)
or you could opt for something from a hairdresser to protect your hair from sun and the elements etc, you would just smooth on some each day (I think most anti-frizz serums/stuff has silicon in it, maybe would make your hair go yucky over here??lots of dirt etc clinging to it). I have some stuff by Wella SP (System Professional) Coloursafe Fluid, which I assume would work just as well on non-coloured hair. I am also a fan of Sebastian Crude clay, which is good for styling as it seems to be absorbed my the next day so you can just out some more in without that icky gel/wax leftover residue feel...but maybe that wouldn't go too well with your curls? Thats my product knowledge over and done with... The curls get the girls Oh sorry you are a girl ha ha ![]() Last edited by AusE : Jan 5th, 2009 at 07:10. Reason: needed smilies |

The water in the US is different depending on where you are and I have been wondering the same thing. I have long, wavy, very thick hair. I generally spend way TOO much time blowdrying & straightening it. Someone suggested I use a shower filter, although it may already be provided in the hotel where I will be staying.

You can get it straightened for about 3 or 4000/- here. Supposed to last a year. I know some who have had it done, and it looks good. But I don't know about these things.......
