Advice on buying Salwar Kameeze

Hi there - planning to buy (and wear!) salwar kameeze for the duration of my month long first ever trip to India

Will be in Delhi for 3 days first off - any tips on where to buy, what works well on a westerner (don't want to look ridiculous) bearing in mind I couldn't possibly carry off the salwar as well as the graceful indian women. All wearing tips appreciated. Staying in a homestay perhaps they will advise on the shopping?! However any advice would be helpful, tks a mill.

Anybody can carry off salwar kameez. After all, it's just trousers and a long shirt. (OK, the dupatta can be a little tricky. ). My only suggestions would be to stick with colors that look good with your complexion, and to avoid styles that are too fancy. "Everyday" SK in cotton or cotton blends are most comfortable and versatile. Try one of the FabIndia shops for nice quality and "classic" designs. It sounds as if you aren't going to be in Delhi long enough to have any SK suits made for you, which is too bad, but ready-mades are available and your homestay family can advise you on where to shop.

hi..

The key to a salvar kameez is the fitting..westerners usually look ridiculous in salwar kameez because they wear poor fitting ones..Go for any good colour but keeep in mind that it sud fit u well..best is to get it stitched

If you want to try having fun bargaining in shops..Go to Lajpat Nagar Central Market, or Sarojini Nagar Market (Both are in South Delhi, and quite famous places) or even try Chandini Chowk (North Delhi near Red Fort)...

If you want to buy it peacefully you can go to any shopping mall and you can find good stores...If you are looking for cheaper option in malls try to find out a Super Market as "Big Bazaar"..It depends on which part of Delhi you are in...Markets for it are almost everywhere around in Delhi/New Delhi...

Don't sell yourself short. No reason why westerners can't look great in a salwar kameez. My American girl looks fab in one, if I say so myself Just wear it w/ confidence and you'll carry it off w/ no problems at all.

The key as someone said is fit and also the right color for your complexion. I look best in red but it's too harsh for my daughter's white skin, so you just have to know what works for ya. Fab India is a nice non-threatening place to shop. Air-conditioned too (I know, pretty pathetic criterion but comfort trumps all else)!

Don't knock it, AC makes a huge difference in Delhi at this time of year. Plus there are changing rooms with mirrors so you can see what you look like and staff that aren't pushy because they're not paid commission.

I headed there on my first morning in India, having never worn SK before, and the staff were brilliant, picking out contrasting sets and finding dupattas that completed "the look".

While I bought far more SKs at much cheaper prices at Sarojini Nagar on later trips, and had them tailored to fit, I'm still far happier with the FabIndia ones that have I tried on before buying them.
