A packing tip (how to pack what ur`e taking)
This is a tip for long trips where you carry a lot, because your`e expecting variable weather. It`s based on over a year of travelling in India.
First divide everything you have to categories, on principle that a category contains stuff that`s used together with stuff from the same category. for example, my categories: "summer" = underwear, short pants, short sleeve T-shirts "winter" = underwear, socks, trousers, heavy shirts, a jacket. "night" = pyjamas, thermal shirts, mosquito cream. "photo equipment" = camera manual, USB card reader, extra memory. "core" = documents, drugs, band-aids, emergency cash. Now pack each category - Fragile stuff should be packed in a sealed plastic box, food boxes (tupperware, fire&ice etc`) are great. use the smallest possible. Non-fragile stuff should be packed in a thick, durable plastic bag. fashion-shop bags are usually good. seal the bag by folding it`s end a couple of times. Now simply stack everything in your backpack. I`m using a sack-type backpack for durability (no zipper, no compartments - just a sack), it takes around 10 seconds to completely load/unload the bag - all you`ll have is basically 3-4 bags and a plastic box. Another advantage: everything`s waterproof! forget those heavy "waterproof" covers. This packing system has been tested under Uttaranchal`s monsoon season! |

I want to add: go with as little as possible. There's EVERYTHING in India. My friend needed a flash memory card, so we went to an internet cafe in Agra, they gave us various quotes, and it was delievered in a matter of hours while we visited the Taj. Lost your shorts? Go to a tailor and get some done. Need some soap? Walk down the street and get some. All I brought was a power converter, a couple books, ultra-concentrated shampoo, and 3 days worth of clothes. Worked out brilliantly.
Goldistan's advice is great, and definately great being that it's taking into account long-term travel over a quick month long visit. |
