Visiting North east

Hi all,
Me and my friends are planning to visit North-east region in month of May. But Apart from visiting cities from a tourist's eye, we had an inclination to explore local tribes and tribal culture or visit probably mela or festival, if it happens to fall in May.
Apart from cultural aspect we are also interested in hiking. If there are beautiful natural places to hike, we would like to visit.
Could you please tells us about the options available to us ?
