Jyotirmoy has told you about trains from calcutta. i have little idea about that since i always fly into gauhati. more convenient and time-saving since i stay in bangalore.

It takes 2 and a half hours to three hours by taxi to shillong. The fare would be 300 bucks per person in a shared taxi from Guwahati railway station. You get good buses too from paltan bazaar which is right next to the railway station. buses would cost 100-120 bucks per person. the road is good but since its rainy season now, there could be landslides and rockfall on the way. have a lovely trip. shillong beautiful and its just coincidence that it happens to be my hometown too )

Very next to the Guwahati Railway Station on the Paltan Bazar side you have the State Transport Bus Station from where you can catch Assam State and Meghalaya State Transport buses to Shillong. In the vicinity, there are many private luxury coach operators operating bus services to Shillong. From the Tourist Taxi Stand you can get Taxis going to Shillong. Share Taxis and Maxi Taxis (Sumos) also operate from around here. The Share Taxis that take in 5 persons charged about Rs.200/- per person and Sumo Maxi Cabs that take in 10 passengers charged Rs.100/- to Rs.120/- per person. With the oil price hike the rates must have gone up.
Yes October is good time.

yeah, october onwards is a good time. it does tend to get a lil chilly after dussehra though so take a warm jacket or shawl along. or you could pick up some from shillong itself....

For the train you can also take the Saraighat Express which is the superfast and takes the least time to go to Guwahati from Kolkata & cabs will be easily available once you reach guwahati.

I think you can visit shillong at your earliest from now as Shillong & Cherrapunjee looks the best during the monsoons and June-September is the peak seasons if you want to view natural beauty of these two places at its best. You can read more about hese two places in my blog: Shillong, Cherrapunjee. If you require any further info. or advice you can contact me.

Shillong Info needed

Hi,
We intend to visit Shillong during the second week of October. 9th-12th to be specific. We will come down to Guwahati from Tawang at about 12PM and intend to start for Shillong in the late afternoon.
Is it Ok to start at arond 4-5 PM in the afternoon?
Our return flight is on 12th afternoon, at 5:40 PM. Will it be better to come down to Guwahati on 11th night or 12th morning?
Will we be getting cab/ bus to Guwahati in the evening or late afternoon and will it be safe to travel at that time?
We want to visit Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram. Will it be possible to cover these two places in a day?
What are the sighe seeing places in Shillong that we must see?
Any idead about packaged tour/cab rates for cherra and sightseeing?
