trip to northeast India - advice needed

Dear All

We are 45 year old married couple from Poland-EU who were traveling independently throughout India three times in the years of 2004/5/6. We visited; Rajastan, Kerala, Goa, Karnataka, Andaman Islands, Varanasi, Madras, In 2007 we explored Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Laos and we were very exiting too. This year we decided to explore India again. Our trip will take arroud 40 days. This time we would like to see mainly Indian tribal live and nature. In terms of the time of our journey -- it is going to be Nov/Dec this year or early January of 2009. In general we would like to have a trip by car with English speaking driver/guide. Basically we prefer quiet places for staying overnight.We are not milionaires and we do not like fancy hotels. We prefer quiet places-guesthouses to be as close to the normal live as possible.

You can check with Help Tourism (www.helptourism.com), they do a lot of community development in Nrth East India and then take tourists to their sites. They have a lot of tribal tours too which might interest you. Lots of experienced and great people.

North-east indeed is a ideal place for viewing the beauty of tribal life....But before that I think you should contact the India Tourism offices maintained by the govt. of India as in most of the places in NE, tourists are not allowed and where it is allowed you need extra permits after applying in proper procedures and guidelines. Assam & Meghalaya will be easier but the other places generally require permits even for Indians. You should choose a proper guide beforehand and staying will generally be in tourism cottages & in some places in hotels which generally charge reasonably.
