Thinking of thieving in Bihar? Best forget it...

In today's newspapers it is reported that a young man, caught snatching a gold chain, was beaten up by the mob, assisted by the police.

He was then tied to a policeman's motorbike and dragged behind the bike until he lost consciousness.

The Hindu's headline: Law of The Jungle.

The New Indian Express has: Law unto Thyself. Shame, Not Justice.

At least the policeman has been suspended.

(probably, unfortunately, not from something).

They showed the video footage of this relentlessly up here in Delhi on the hindi-language news. I don't think they edited anything out, it was really gruesome.

I saw this. It was shocking, and I really felt for the guy. Anyone interested in the video can see it here. Warning though, it is graphic.

The part I can't figure out is who video taped it? It wasn't done on a cell phone, it had to be a video camera.

The narrator on the video says that even though the press was filming it, the people still continued to beat the man.

Concerns for Human rights are not very old in India and people are actually not aware about them...

This one has been caught on the camera, that is the reason all this hue and cry, otherwise such incidents are very common ..and I am not talking only Bihar here...and the worst part is that public doesn't blink an eyelid...for them these things are pretty normal, they would actually be happy that police took some action and punished the culprit..

Right! The woman whose chain was snatched was not sorry for the snatcher. People believe in instant justice atleast for the street crimes. The police save their time & energy by not reporting the incident and giving instant justice.

Saw the picture on the front page of The Hindu and that was enough for me.

But since when did 'mods' started doing such things?

Any reason why mods shouldn't read the papers?

Thanks Mridula Nick, tsk tsk tsk. I didn't know that you were taking your duties so seriously. You are an Indiamike mod not All India mod . Back to Chennai in such short time. Is there something that we should know . From now on I will be very careful about what I write. It could have been me.

I read the story in the morning and was absolutely ashamed of it. The guy was critically injured.

Nick, The policeman was suspended, but they did try to protect the constable saying that they were not dragging the guy, but tied him to the vehicle so that he cannot escape and the guy fell off in one of the road bumps and was hence dragged. They say that they were actually protecting the guy from the Mob.

What a bunch of heartless, pathetic liars.
