Special Permit To Visit Assam?

Hi, this is my first post and I apologize if this question seems stupid. I am going to India for my first time this summer. I plan on travelling for a bit (Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi, Varanasi) and then heading to IIT Guwahati for a research internship.

In other posts I have read, people were talking about restricted access in the north east and I was wondering if I would need any special papers to enter Assam?

Also, I checked the Indian rail website and it seemed like the train from Varanasi to Guwahati did not have spots for "foriegners." Does that matter? Can I ride the rail and just buy a normal Indian ticket?

thank you for your help,
Dave

From what I understand, Assam is one of the few northeastern states that can be visited freely without a permit. I'd like some confirmation on that though.

You do not need any permits to visit Guwahati or Assam, you will have your passport/visa checked during your journey to Assam and at road check points while you are there. Make sure you have the correct visa, or just tell them you are a tourist if you have a tourist visa.

With regards to the train, just buy/book any ticket for whatever class/train you require.

Fine just don't say that you are heading to IIT Guwahati for a research internship. (You need a Research or Student Visa for that)

The tourist quota is just that: a certain quota of reserved seats on certain trains to accommodate tourists should things get booked up (and that you shouldn't expect too much of).

It doesn't mean you can't get a regular ticket.

Bon voyage.

Smile From Samdrup Jhongkar - Jaigon via ASSAM?

Hi!!!

Does anyone know about making this trip?

After travelling across Bhutan I'm planning to emerge from the east of the country and go back west across Assam via Darranga - Jaigon. I've heard the trip takes about 9 hours and I'd like to do it as quickly a possible (in one day).

I'm an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India).

Smile Oh, yeah, the permit part...

So I assume I don't need any permit, either.

Correct?
