Sikkim to Bangladesh via Assam & Tripura?
We are going to be in the Sikkim/Darjeeling area in December and need to eventually get to Dhaka.
Is it possible to take a series of buses from Siliguri west to Guwahti (Assam), south to Shillong (Meghalaya) and continue south to Agartala (Tripuri) before heading west into Bangladesh? Would it be better to take a train from New Jalpaiguri to Guwahati? #2424-DBRT RAJDHANI - takes only 6+ hours, but it originates in Dehli. How late might it be running by the time it gets to NJP? Is there a border crossing between Shillong and Sylhet that would be an alternative to going through Tripura? Are special permits necessary for any of the three states? Are there any good reasons to be concerned about safety on the main highway through Tripura? Please feel free to give me suggestions or comments or advice to not try this. We left our LP in India last year and haven't gotten the new one and don't yet have any good books about the northeast. |

Hi Diane
You have planned a very good panning indeed. Sikkim is a great place to visit- but I am worried you would go there in December- because would be snowing and slides! at that time. But indeed--a very nice place to look at Kanchenjhenga, go to Roomtek and Tsongo lake. On the issue to go to Bangladesh- you don't have to take any permission to visit either Assam/Meghlaya/Tripura/. I am not sure what time the train reaches Gauhati- but all buses reach there during daytime. If you don't want to halt at Gauhati-- take a bus from NJ -and you will reach to Gauhati by 100am - just the time to book a ticket straight to Agartala. The journey in Tripura is less dangerous than Assam. While there is a border to Syllet from Meghalaya - I am not sure about it as I don't have any experience. If you already have the papers ready to go to Bangladesh - I would suggest you go through Agartala. Its just 8 hrs from Dhaka. Also you can easily get papers done from Agartala. And if you don't want to go to Dhaka directly- and to Syllet first --there is a place called Dharmanagar in Tripura ( near Assam-Tripura border) through which Syllet is very near.
