Safety in Imphal/Manipur

Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of info and advice. I'm a young female lawyer planning a trip to meet with some clients of mine in Manipur. They live in a rural village in the surrounding countryside, but I am hoping to persuade them to come and meet with me in Imphal. The current plan is that I would fly to Imphal from Delhi with one client, stay in Imphal and either travel out to the village each day or stay in the city throughout.

I am concerned by what I hear about the dangers in this part of India. Can anyone tell me:

(a) is Imphal somewhere I should avoid or do I just need to exercise caution?

(b) is it advisable (pr even possible?) to visit the tribal village?

(c) what precautions can I take to minimise the risks? (are there many other western tourists in Manipur or would I be a conspicuous target if I were to wander round the city on my own?)

(d) I would be travelling in early/mid June - should I be concerned about the heat/monsoon? (ie what sort of weather can I expect?)

(e) If I do go I'd like to make the most of my trip - is there anywhere I could safely visit in the local area? (anything I really should see/do while I'm there?)

Any thoughts and information would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to make an informed decision before making any firm plans.
